Why is Spotlight Search textbox disappearing?

Whenever I hit my keyboard shortcut [command + option + spacebar] to open Spotlight Search, as soon as I begin typing a couple of letter into the text input field, the text input box closes suddenly. Why is this happening? Is there a fix? I'm running macOS Sierra 10.12.6 on an early 2015 MacBook Pro. Thanks.
