If still unresolved then your device will need to be serviced.
This is quite a common problem with the iPhone 7/7plus and it's a hardware issue, not a software. I'd you take it to Apple, they will tell you they can't fix it, and make you buy a new phone. But this issue can be fixed. I highly encourage you to Google this issue and look for answers elseware other than Apple.
All the research I've been doing has pointed to a hardware issue. I'm trying to find out which internal component has failed so I can eventually perform the fix myself. I'm also purposely delaying on the self repair in the hopes Apple will finally acknowledge the issue and repair it on their own dime.
I believe this is a complicated fix requiring soldering skills. Please don’t try this unless you have confidence in yourself. Go to a reliable 3rd party repair store or try another apple store. Write a mail to Tim Cook or senior executives that you are being charged for something that should be free. Please do this if you believe you have not abused your device in any way.
Not at all. It doesn’t require any soldering to reflow a surface mount chip, you just need to gently heat the solder to reform the dried out / flakey bonds. Pros use hot air, but I’ve fixed gfx chips on boards using a heat gun attachment for a gas soldering iron to reflow. Audio IC might be too delicate, although what have you got to lose?
Update: I took my phone to my local apple store in Cairo. They told me that they couldn’t fix my problem because I had bought the phone in Europe. They told me they would ask Apple support to give me a call later that day. When they called, I explained my situation to the guy and he didn’t seem convinced that I hadn’t caused the issue. I asked for another technician to be put on. I explained the situation again and I told him that I would be more than happy to prove to him in any way possible that my phone has NO damage despite being almost two years old. I don’t have a single scratch on my phone. He asked me to bring the phone back to the Apple store and for them to send him a report with photos of the phone. The guy was extremely friendly and helpful. Anyways, I went to the Apple store and they checked the internal cavity of the phone and the exterior and filed the report. Turns out I was right, my phone had literally NO damage physically. Anyways, the guy I was in contact with called me a couple of hours ago to congratulate me that I will be able to replace my iPhone 7 with a new one, free of charge. Honestly, the technician I had was an awesome dude. He personally made the effort to contact me and help me every step of the way. Unfortunately, some people aren’t so lucky with their Apple Support Technicians. He even told me to call him back to let him know I received my new phone and he gave me his contact details. This guy deserves a raise.
my iPhone 7 256gb got disable microphone, reset several times, fail. Went to apple store, they detected logic board. However warranty were expired, no insurance no apple care, because I cut my budget. They only solve is swap it for $319 swap it or upgrade $250 off.
So is this Apple company’s game to get profit out of random iPhone 7 users to buy their product? This is so wrong.. who made update? Suppose they replace their damage instead of us!
It's not a long term fix but my iPhone 7 that just started this is week works fine with a blue tooth ear piece.
Same issue: iPhone 7+, no audio device found after installing software update 12.1.2 - can't hear or record audio on calls, voice memos, nor via connecting to an audio device via lightning. It seems to be obviously a device driver issue - it affects 3 different audio busses on my phone, and as with other posters above, happened after the latest software update. Apple support said it sounded like a bug.
Also, at the same time I had issues appear with photos - camera freezes on IG and iPhone Camera, video not initialising, audio not recording on video. It would be a great coincidence if these myriad devices all failed physically at once.
Factory reset didn't help. I have a genius bar appointment tomorrow, I imagine this will be a waste of time. I imagine the only solution will be awaiting software update.
It seems weird, I agree, but one reason could be that the new firmware employs the hardware in a way which will not work if the audio IC chip has been lifted, whereas the previous ious firmware didn't. That's just a guess.
Btw... It seems that if you buy an iPhone directly from an Apple Store (at least in the UK), there is some kind of legislation which means they give you 2 years warranty. Although this might be to do with the EU, and might not be relevant after Brexit.
Update to my experience:
After my last post about the problem being resolved after a Recovery Mode (DFU) restart, the problem came back! I was going to make a call and actually HEARD a crackle sound in the speaker and then nothing... the speakerphone icon greyed out, the voice memo app gave the error message again. So, I tried as the Apple agent suggested and did a FULL update/restore using recovery (DFU) mode to completely wipe and reinstall the OS, then skipped all setup and backup restore stuff and setup as new device.... problem still persists. So... now she is for sure it is a hardware issue, of course. I still think its a combination of both because it seems odd it always happens after an update and it went away for a short period after a DFU restart, but either way, Apple should be doing more about this issue then just brushing it off and forcing us to PAY in some way!
I had notice the strangest issue. Since my iPhone 7 have trouble with microphone because of logic board. Guess what.. when i plug lightening cable charger to my 2015 Dodge Ram 1500 as it already paired with Bluetooth there. Microphone as FaceTime seem work. While I stay on FaceTime and unplugged to go walk into store and still connection. After hang up, then try to call again and then back to old problem again.
So what’s sup with that? Maybe try yourself plug your iPhone to your car or truck that was paired to your automotive radio station something like that. Let me know if that familiar...
I just came back from the Apple Store in Amsterdam. Same issue, no audio devices found. Same answer: Not reparable, and they offered me the same phone, but then new, for €280,- excl tax. A phone that costed more than €800,- new about 26 months ago, is now worthless. So much for buying Apple computers my entire life (also when it wasn't that mainstream yet).
What's interesting, is that the guy at Apple even acknowledged it's a mistake from Apple, and he admitted he didn't understand why there is no replacement program. Apple needs to replace these iPhones with the same model, or at least a refurbished one.
IOS 12.0.1 has made my phone virtually unusable. I've tried doing several types of resets (from network settings to the whole device) and it doesn't fix the issue. Sometimes I can make calls, other times I cannot hear anything and the receiver cannot hear me. Sometimes It only works through speaker, its very annoying!
Yes same here I feel like apple intentionally does this to try to force people to spend an outrageous amount of money on a new phone when the old one works perfectly fine. As soon as I did the update I had the same thing happen. And of course there will be no reinbursement
I spent a lot of time on the phone with apple (4+ hours) and continued to tell them I wasn't pleased with just replace the phone especially where it's a known problem. I finally got told by a supervisor that they'd look at it and if the problem isn't from impact or water damage he could wave the $319 cost. I'll update once it gets looked at.
