IOS 12.0.1 has made my phone virtually unusable. I've tried doing several types of resets (from network settings to the whole device) and it doesn't fix the issue. Sometimes I can make calls, other times I cannot hear anything and the receiver cannot hear me. Sometimes It only works through speaker, its very annoying!

10 out of 10 to Apple customer service. The Genius Bar appointment came up with a pretty swift diagnosis - the infamous Audio IC hardware fault and also a software corruption of iOS. The phone was out of warranty but at 20 months, was under two years old so they replaced it for me on the spot with a new phone.

The audio Ic issue is a fault across several devices where the weak point by the sim tray causes flexion and a ball joint on the IC chip lifts. The software issue may be occurring with that particular update, and there’s no way to correct it except by giving it to Apple.

It’s pretty impossible to imagine any other company on Earth dealing with the issue so swiftly, sympathetically, and totally - even to the point they had exactly my model of phone in stock, despite not having retailed it for a long time. I know everyone has different experiences, but this is mine. I’m just an ordinary customer but they made me feel like I was sitting in first class.

What Apple Store did you go to? The one I went to was less than useful at North Star Mall in San Antonio, Tx. The tech was quick to run a diagnostic test which stated that everything worked perfectly. Then a mic test was suggested. The tech quickly tried to sell me a "new" phone instead of trying to help resolve the problem caused by Apple. Felt like last class instead of first class!

White City in west london - probably not worth the trip ;)

When you open voice memos and press record do you get a no audio device found message? If not then it’s not the hardware issue, if so then go back to apple, I suggest. The hardware test run over the web showed nothing, the one in store didn’t complete because the issues were pretty bad clearly

tl;dr; Reset didn't help. Apple Store replaced my phone.

I just got back from the Apple Store (after going through the official process via support app + phone call). They asked me to reset the iPhone and check if it still persists, which it did. So off to the Apple Store I went.

I had the same issue after updating to 12.1.2. They checked it and confirmed that it's an audio issue and even though I've been out of warranty for 2 months now they said they'd replace my phone as it was an issue after the update. They told me I now have 2 more years of warranty for the new phone. Very happy with their service.

Same issue after 12.1.2 update. iPhone 7 plus with no audio devices found. Tried everything, even update to 12.1.3 beta. Spent time on the phone with support and just got done at the genius bar. Final answer is pay $340 to get it sent in for repair. It should not be the responsibility of the consumer to pay for a repair that a software update caused. Highly disappointed that I've got a phone that can't be used as a phone. I'm turning off auto update on all my other iPhones so I don't have this issue again. Apple should be covering down on faulty equipment that they produced. I'm quickly losing faith in this "trillion dollar" company.

Thank you for the suggestions. Apple has a case number linked to the phone and most likely they've already annotated that I've refused to pay $340+ to have it shipped in for repair. So it would be pointless to drive more that 2 hours away for the next store. The live chat on the Apple support app eventually lead me to the store. I'm pretty much here to vent about how disappointing the situation is. I'm hoping if enough consumers with the same issue come forward maybe Apple may take responsibility for it. But I'm not holding my breath on it.

Thanks again for the suggestions though.

It's quite a longstanding issue with the Audio IC board / chip, on this and other iphone / iPad models. Google it, there are quite detailed videos. You can reflow the chip yourself. However, it's been around a long time, and Apple won't recall it or fix it for free unless it's in warranty. It's the audio board flexing a small amount next to the sim tray, a structural weak point, which lifts a connection on the chip.

I believe this is a complicated fix requiring soldering skills. Please don’t try this unless you have confidence in yourself. Go to a reliable 3rd party repair store or try another apple store. Write a mail to Tim Cook or senior executives that you are being charged for something that should be free. Please do this if you believe you have not abused your device in any way.

Not at all. It doesn’t require any soldering to reflow a surface mount chip, you just need to gently heat the solder to reform the dried out / flakey bonds. Pros use hot air, but I’ve fixed gfx chips on boards using a heat gun attachment for a gas soldering iron to reflow. Audio IC might be too delicate, although what have you got to lose?

I’ve tried everything and this issue is still persisting. I updated from iOS11 to iOS12.1 the day before yesterday and since then the audio bug had started. I didn’t drop my phone between that time and now. Before this everything was perfectly functional on my phone. I’m extremely ****** off. The nearest apple store is a two hour train ride away and it costs €50 to get there. I’m a university student. I don’t have time nor the money for this issue.

Please try to take it to an Apple store and see what they do. If you didn’t abuse your device they should replace it , since it’s a hardware issue. If unsuccessful try a 3rd party repair store OR write a mail to Tim Cook , Phil Schiller or other Apple executives. This is a hardware issue ,and you should not be charged unless you abused your device.

Why is it this so-called "hardware issue" only surfaces the morning after a software update? This is nonsense.

It is not the first time Apple has pushed an update to one of my Apple products that bricked the hardware. Very frustrating but typical.

It is making me second-guess my desire to have my family in the Apple ecosystem.

Jan 31, 2019 6:36 AM in response to WhyAmISoLoyaltoApple

It seems weird, I agree, but one reason could be that the new firmware employs the hardware in a way which will not work if the audio IC chip has been lifted, whereas the previous ious firmware didn't. That's just a guess.

Btw... It seems that if you buy an iPhone directly from an Apple Store (at least in the UK), there is some kind of legislation which means they give you 2 years warranty. Although this might be to do with the EU, and might not be relevant after Brexit.
