IOS 12.0.1 has made my phone virtually unusable. I've tried doing several types of resets (from network settings to the whole device) and it doesn't fix the issue. Sometimes I can make calls, other times I cannot hear anything and the receiver cannot hear me. Sometimes It only works through speaker, its very annoying!

Bang on!! Had the same problem, no audio and for some reason can only make phone calls via Bluetooth device. speaking to third party repair shops, This is a common issue in early iPhone 7’s. When speaking to Apple customer service , they will not admit it. Through Apple repair chamber £372 third party £60. It’s the audio port that becomes dislodged due to where it is

I recently took my iPhone 7 into the apple store as I was having the same issue. After updating to iOS 12.1, my microphone stopped working making it impossible for me to talk on the phone, FaceTime, record voice memos, use Siri, etc.

The genuius bar employee was nice and helpful, but I did not get the result that I came for. He explained that since the phone is out of warranty I would need to buy a new iPhone 7 for $320. He also said that I could trade it in and purchase an iPhone 8 for $350. What kind of pricing model is this?? Does apple really believe that their consumers are so mindless and oblivious to see how marginal this difference is? The only other option I was given was to purchase a new iPhone X for $800 or however much those slightly larger, slightly better camera devices are.

I explained multiple times how I had not dropped my phone, it had no water damage, and that this was clearly a software issue on their end. I don’t understand how they expect a person to pay $320+ because they can’t create updates without screwing up older gen iPhones. 3 years ago I dropped my iPhone in water (completely my fault) and took it to the apple store and had it replaced for free no questions asked. It wasn’t even under warranty and now things are completely different. I’m extremely dissapointed in the lack of respect apple has recently shown towards their customers. I understand it is in their agenda to push new products out of the store, yet I still fail to see how any of this software issue warrants any money coming from my pocket.

Long story short, I left the store in a rage and borrowed a friends old iPhone 6 to transfer everything to. Cost me $0 to do and I will not be purchasing apple products in the future.

tldr; apple does not care about their consumers and think that their customers are dull minded people who can’t see obvious flaws in their software updates and pricing models.

Same here. This is my second round of hardware issues with the iPhone 7. I had the "no service" issue that required

a replacement phone and now the "no audio device found" problem that showed up magically after my 12.x updates. I was told that I was the first and only person to report this problem at this store. They also stated that it cannot be related to the software update, the folks on the internet are just unhappy customers. After running diagnostics it reported audio circuit failures and since it is out of warranty it will cost $300+ to swap since it cannot be easily repaired. I asked if I could downgrade to pre iOS 12.1 to prove the "it's not the software" claim and they said no way to do it. After complaining about my displeasure regarding the short life of the iPhone 7 they stated that the "average life of a smart phone is about 2 years". Wow!!! I guess I was lucky to have it work close to the "average smartphone life time". It was clearly time to walk out of the store and walk away from Apple and its products. If anyone knows how to downgrade iOS or fix this software problem, please let me know.

For all saying this a hardware issue, I am now questioning that... or maybe it’s both hardware and software. It’s weird, no less. This is the second iPhone 7 Plus I’ve had this issue with. The first, I had replaced through carrier insurance in October. Now it’s happened again. Both times, Apple support has done software troubleshooting and tried restoring to no resolution. NEVER was there mention to try to restore using DFU mode. I read some about this from other sources and decided to try it. I did not even do the restore, but instead just entered DFU mode and the restarted the device from there. Now the issue is resolved! No error in voice memo app, FaceTime and audio calls work! Seems software related to me. I should note both incidents started the same as others have mentioned, after an update.

This is exactly the same condescending attitude I received from the Apple genius. I am an engineer and know a thing or two about system architecture. The line between hardware and software is not absolute like you claim. Regardless, the fact that hundreds if not thousands of Apple customers have the same issue "immediately" after the software update is suspect at best. All that I asked of Apple was to uninstall to new update and prove that its not hardware before I blindly trust them and spend more money. They refused so I refused to give them any more of my money and time. I bought a Pixel 3 and will look to the Android community for better help and hopefully a little less snobbery.

Update: I took my phone to my local apple store in Cairo. They told me that they couldn’t fix my problem because I had bought the phone in Europe. They told me they would ask Apple support to give me a call later that day. When they called, I explained my situation to the guy and he didn’t seem convinced that I hadn’t caused the issue. I asked for another technician to be put on. I explained the situation again and I told him that I would be more than happy to prove to him in any way possible that my phone has NO damage despite being almost two years old. I don’t have a single scratch on my phone. He asked me to bring the phone back to the Apple store and for them to send him a report with photos of the phone. The guy was extremely friendly and helpful. Anyways, I went to the Apple store and they checked the internal cavity of the phone and the exterior and filed the report. Turns out I was right, my phone had literally NO damage physically. Anyways, the guy I was in contact with called me a couple of hours ago to congratulate me that I will be able to replace my iPhone 7 with a new one, free of charge. Honestly, the technician I had was an awesome dude. He personally made the effort to contact me and help me every step of the way. Unfortunately, some people aren’t so lucky with their Apple Support Technicians. He even told me to call him back to let him know I received my new phone and he gave me his contact details. This guy deserves a raise.

Yes! This is super frustrating on Apple’s part! Not only is this my SECOND time experiencing this issue, but the fact they just don’t care about it and are almost forcing you to upgrade. Even before this last update, my camera app has been almost non-functional and now I’ve had other issues after the update. I know Android isn’t perfect, but at least going to it I’d have more options for “default” apps if others start breaking and with ROMs you can easily just install a different one to verify a hardware issue like this.

I am experiencing the same issue, but my phone is out of warranty. I just came back from Apple's Grand Central location and they refused to acknowledge this as a software issue. I just wrote the below email and copied their senior managers. We need to push this issue with Apple and escalate it to their senior management. This is the only we they wil address it.

Subject: iPhone 7 Plus - Serious Issue not addressed by Apple

The microphone on my iPhone 7 Plus stopped working after I updgraded to IOS 12.0.1. Before doing any research on the issue, I visited the Genius Bar at Grand Central and was told the microphone stopped working due to hardware malfunction. However, based on doing research, this is clearly not a hardware issue but a software issue (refer to the link below). Apple needs to address this issue as soon as possible and confirm definitively whether or not hundreds of testimonials from Apple users online are valid. The IOS update is clearly bricking these phones. Even though my phone is out of warranty, I should not be forced to pay Apple more money for the replacement of my unit. An $800 device should have a longer life than 3 years. Please address as possible. Please confirm back this email

Update to my experience:

After my last post about the problem being resolved after a Recovery Mode (DFU) restart, the problem came back! I was going to make a call and actually HEARD a crackle sound in the speaker and then nothing... the speakerphone icon greyed out, the voice memo app gave the error message again. So, I tried as the Apple agent suggested and did a FULL update/restore using recovery (DFU) mode to completely wipe and reinstall the OS, then skipped all setup and backup restore stuff and setup as new device.... problem still persists. So... now she is for sure it is a hardware issue, of course. I still think its a combination of both because it seems odd it always happens after an update and it went away for a short period after a DFU restart, but either way, Apple should be doing more about this issue then just brushing it off and forcing us to PAY in some way!

Same thing here - microphone suddenly died on my 1.5 year old phone. Apples only solution is to buy a new one. That this company feels it’s acceptable for a $600 phone to last only 1.5 years is insanity. “You can buy a new one.” Great. So that the next one can crash in no time and I’m back to buying ANOTHER new one. Planned obsolescence is alive and well, I’m afraid.
