volume stuck on mute, cant untick the mute box in sound settings (macbook air)

This appears when i try to raise/lower/mute the volume with the keys.

I cant tick 'unmute' because the button is faded/greyed out and i cant click on it at all.

How can I fix this and will it be very expensive?

I cant turn off mute button - nor turn up the volume on my mac book air My Macbook Air is muted and the mute button is disabled in the Sound are of System Preferences. Also, the buttons to increase/decrease/mute sound no longer seem to be working. What do I do to fix this?

Hi,

Resetting NVRAM could solve the problem.

Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
