Before you begin troubleshooting, update any out-of-date software to their latest versions: iPhone is iOS 12.0.1 and Mac is 10.14. You can restart both devices and try reconnecting. Make sure cables and USB ports are working properly. Also, check for third party security software. This can prevent your Mac from recognizing your phone.
