Bloated OS?

I have a late 2012 iMac (Model 13,2) with 8 GB RAM. Lately one particular app (1Password) has been really slow. Etrecheck reported I was out of RAM. Huh? Never happened before. 8 GB is plenty. Last month's Etrecheck checkup (I run it monthly) showed no memory usage problem. Activity Monitor showed kernel_task well over 1GB. A little googling came up with articles reporting this is apparently a problem. Rebooting is the only reported temporary solution (until it bloats again). I rebooted and Etrecheck then reported plenty of RAM. AM shows kernel_task well under 1 GB. 1P is back to its old self. So, what is up here? Are those writing about kernel_task wrong, or are they right?

I just upgraded to Mojave, and ran Activity Monitor. I didn't see kernel_task at first. Just found it and it is using only 34 MB RAM and 3% CPU. The is a lot different than with HS. Which makes me wonder if it is the same kernel_task? Apple must have offloaded a lot of kernel_task functions to other processes, and spread it around.

As far as ideal conditions, it sounds like adding RAM is the only real solution. An SSD isn't in my budget.

I am just making a guess about the killed tasks. You haven't posted your EtreCheck report so I'm just listing the things that could cause EtreCheck to complain. Perhaps this is something I need to fix. If so, now would be a very good time to post that EtreCheck report because I plan to push out an update tomorrow.

For the record, the operating system will kill its own tasks when it starts to run out of RAM. It will do that before it gets to swap space. I think this started in 10.10 or 10.11. I forget. Well, it definitely started in iOS.

Didn't save the out of RAM report. Report after rebooting shows nothing of interest, all is well. So no point in posting. All I can do is watch. Currently, AM shows kernel_task hovering around 883 MB, this website at 224 MB and iCloud.com at 114MB. Everything else much smaller. Memory pressure is low, with 5.2 GB used out of 8 on the machine. Cached files at 2.65 GB, no swap. So all good, for now.

Its been 2 weeks since I posted this thread. I noticed things are slow again. Activity Monitor showed kernel_task again bloated to well over 1 GB memory. Swap was being used. I have made exactly no changes to the computer. Just running like usual. I powered down and AM shows kernel_task running below 800 MB. No swap. Obviously kernel_task has a problem.

I wonder if Mojave would make it worse, or no change?

This Mac has a 1 TB Fusion drive.

Yes, Etrecheck only reports low RAM when swap is being used. I am aware of that. And until recently I never saw that. I run Etrecheck regularly to keep an eye things. As of September Etrechck was reporting no problems with RAM, and I never noticed slowness. Even without rebooting for many weeks. The slowness and out-of-RAM reports are new behavior. I have made exactly zero changes to my computer: nothing added by me, nothing removed by me, same old same old. The only changes are whatever patches Apple is pushing. I always update as soon as notified (except for Mojave ... and it sounds like my concerns are justified, if I am understanding your third paragraph).

If you're telling me I have run out of RAM because the OS, or that I need an SSD to maintain performance, then it is time to rethink everything and perhaps change platforms.

BTW, who is killing system tasks? Killed system tasks that didn't properly die was a problem long ago with Windows. That has been fixed. I'd be shocked if macOS was doing that, or if there was memory leak.

i have no idea if you have a clue what your talking about so it's hard to comment

when you close apps use "Quit" not "Close" or they will stay in memory and consume it (this allows quick re-opening but does consume memory)

some apps can consume allot of memory depending on how they are used. your 1password program i have no idea. it's not an App Store app i gather. i can't say if it's even wise to use it (if it works with the CURRENT version you've updated to)

Hello,

I can tell you that kernel_task is not the problem. For an 8 GB machine, a little over 1 GB for kernel_task is normal. EtreCheck is going to report low RAM if you are using swap space or if you get some killed system tasks.

A modern macOS system (such as Mojave) is designed to use all available RAM, and then some. It doesn't really matter if you use swap space or have killed system tasks. Your fast SSD will pick up the slack and you shouldn't ever notice a problem. I have seen some people get into a problem where they run out of space on their SSD. Then you're in a pickle.

Wait a minute. A 2012 iMac? Does that thing even have an SSD? If not, that would be unfortunate. Imagine taking your phone and replacing the flash storage with a mechanical hard drive. And make sure you don't use one of those fancy 7200 RPM drives. Find a really slow 5400 RPM drive. Now, how fast is your phone with that drive? If you upgrade an older Mac to Mojave, that is essentially what you are doing.

You should be able to upgrade the RAM on that machine. It is a 2012 model, so it has Thunderbolt. You could connect it to an external SSD and boot from that. The only problem is that external Thunderbolt devices that take SSDs are relatively rare and expensive. You have to find an older device too. Those will be even more expensive. Thunderbolt is not really backwards compatible. You may not be able to use a Thunderbolt 3 device on that machine. It depends on the device. No way for me to tell. I recently purchased an external Thunderbolt and didn't notice that it was USB-C. I got it home and it didn't work. It was bus-powered and my Thunderbolt-USB-C adapter didn't pass power in the other direction. I had to take it back to the store. Your mileage may vary.
