Mojave won't load - claims that time machine is using my hard disc

This is a Mac mini (Late 2014) running 10.13.6

When I try to load Mojave I get to the HD selection and it will not go further. A flag pops up saying that this HD is being used by time machine. I go into time machine and it appears to be using another HD for back-up.

I have plenty of room on HD, and Mojave is compatible with 2014 iMac. Tried deleting the download and then downloading again as well as force quitting the install mojave app, and rebooting. Had no problems on my 2 laptops. I also tried turning off time machine automatic back ups. Any ideas?

Big Sur Upgrade stalls saying “This disk is used for Time Machine backups” Hi! I’m trying to upgrade a Mac mini running High Sierra to Big Sur (or any newer OS). Upon downloading and running the Big Sur upgrade, I get to the point where I select the disk to install to and it won’t let me choose the Macintosh HD because of a pop up that reads, “This disk is used for Time Machine backups.” So I can’t select any drive to install to. I do use Time Machine, but, obviously, it backs up “Macintosh HD” to a different drive. I’ve reviewed the Time Machine Settings and nothing refers back to Macintosh HD as a destination drive. The same results are reached when I try, instead, to upgrade to Mojave or Catalina. I have also created a bootable USB drive for Mojave installation, which works on other Macs, but on the Mac Mini in question will not even start the installer, but rather bumps to rescue mode (even though alt/option is pressed, not command-r). I’m stumped. Thanks for any thoughts.

Mojave installation problem When I try to install 10.14.1 today, I followed the instructions as per the App Store and got the following when I clicked onto my hard drive to install "This disk is used for Time Machine backups". There are no other disks attached to my iMac, late 2017 Retina 5K 4.2Ghz. I am currently running 10.13.6.

Please read If you can't install macOS on a Time Machine backup disk.
