Hi Kriptik23,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. I understand that occasionally you're hearing sound distortion when receiving a message notification on your iPhone. I know it's important for the speaker on your iPhone to work as expected; I'd like to help. I'd like for you to test and see if this behavior occurs when using a different text tone; tap Settings > Sound, and select a different alert from the list. Take some time to test and see if the issue occurs when you're using a different tone. If so, I'd also recommend following the steps below, including contacting Apple if the behavior is unresolved:

Before you follow these steps, see if your speaker works: In Settings > Sounds (or Settings > Sounds & Haptics), drag the Ringer And Alerts slider up or down a few times.

  • If you don't hear any sound, your speaker might need service. Contact Apple Support.
  • If you do hear sound, use the steps below and check the sound after each step.

Check sound with an app

Open an app that has music or sound effects, then adjust the volume with your volume buttons or the slider in Control Center.

Plug headphones into your device

If you can hear sound through the headphones but not through your device's speakers, unplug the headphones and clear dust or debris from the headset port on your device.

Restart your device

Turn off your device, then turn it back on. Check the sound again. If you still don't hear any sound, contact Apple Support.

If you hear no sound or distorted sound from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch speaker

Best Regards.

Hi

I captured the video after the last update of iOS 12.1.3. First I tried to fix the problem by getting a new SIM-card but it wouldn't help. So the problem is intermitted. It's not always you get this problem.

Yesterday I discovered that when I sent a message with the Iphone of my wife to my Iphone, to provoke this issue (for capturing on video): the issue happens when you sent a message with the 'normal' Iphone to the 'problem' Iphone, and you push 'send', you can see the normal Iphone hesitates to send but the message is 'hanging', so you push once again 'send' and than the process of sending continues and you receive on the 'problem' Iphone the distored sound of message.

Also it's my expercience when there's a text communication between Android phone and iPhone, you get more of this issues. So in my opinion it's a protocol problem...

Any other tips?

Thanks!

The youtube link is exactly what happens.. although some of you experience it monthly, i experience it almost everyday. New iphone 8 in Nov 2018, 12.1.2 software. Funny thing is my wife (iphone 7 old software, 11 series) has been mocking me over this funny text echo distorition and she updated to the 12.1.3 yesterday, and wouldn't you know it son of gun this afternoon, her phone did it!!

So Definitely related to the software and yes probably demand on the cpu.. But dang its a text notification One of the primary functions of a cell phone.. Apple get this sorted out. I dont have a fix which is why I am here too..

Keep posting updates because there are more people with this issue than Apple probably thinks.

I tested this: on my Ipad I'm logged in with my Apple account. You can also see this on your Iphone (synchro).

For the test I logged out from my iPad (only logged in on the iPhone).

I've sent over 40 SMS to my iPhone: everthing workes fine. I'll keep testing.

I’m having the same issue on my iPhone X. It happens every single day without fail and on both incoming SMS and iMessages. The CPU being “too busy” to process a simple notification sound is a **** poor excuse for this issue to occur since the onboard CPU is more than capable of handling this task. Not to mention it occurs when the phone is locked and idle so there’s a very minimal load on the CPU. It’s rather annoying and in my case occurs frequently enough such that I actually commented on this post.

I'm also facing the same issue. I heard some crackling and static noise sometimes when i received any message notification on my device. I had also tried all the suggested option by apple support like resetting of phone, updated to latest version, using another ringtone. I also visited apple service center two time for the same issue. They just deposit my device for one weak But they're also not able to solve this weird issue. Sometime it's too much irritating.

I have a same issue since I changed to Iphone 8Plus. It only happened once a while and I called twice for supports and they just asked me to do software updated or reset my phone. I also booked an appointment in apple store but they said nothing wrong. Good to hear not only I have this problem so Apple should do something to fix the problem instead of waiting our one year warranty expired.

I'm using iPhone 7 and was having same issue with an echo/reverb kind of sound with my alert tone for my messages. I was signed into my iPhone and went to settings and tapped sign out (apple id) and the problem stopped. I now have a solid alert tone (chords) when receiving a text message. But be sure to use the option to keep your contacts and safari data and make sure you download and keep your original photos on your phone. This is temporary until a fix comes along in an update. But be careful before you do this. I haven't signed back in to see if the problem is still gone.

Same issue here. iPhone 7 Plus 128GB. I tried different chimes for SMS, but the issue persist. It tries to play the same sound right after a few milliseconds later it just played the notification so there are 2 chimes going on and ends with an echoing repeat, while crackling like a bad speaker. This doesn't happen every single SMS, but I'd say 6 out of 10.

When will there be a fix for this? Randomly I’ll get text messages from people and the alert sound will echo about 6 times. Sounds like the phone is sick. It has done this for me ever since I had the phone and with every latest iOS update since May 2018. The sound on my phone otherwise works perfectly. Phone does get kinda hot from time to time though
