Hi.

I had also this problem on my iPhone 7.

There were 4 things that i did:

  1. I reset network settings
  2. go to Settings-Messages-Send & Receive: i select only my phone number WITHOUT email
  3. go to Settings-FaceTime : i logout from Apple ID, so you dont use it for FaceTime and that is written that you can only be reached by FaceTime on your mobile number.
  4. go to Settings-Notification-Messages: set notification grouping to OFF

This is what i did and my text messages notification is normal for the past 2 weeks.

I hope that this will also help you.

When you say "chasing a non-issue," do you mean "it's working exactly as intended?" Do you mean, "you just paid a thousand bucks for a phone, don't worry that it's not working properly?"

In my mind, chasing a non-issue would be my mother saying nothing happens when she presses the keys on her computer because she forgot to turn it on. A non-issue would be my phone rings when someone calls me while I'm eating dinner.

Not my phone sounds awful because somewhere, something isn't programmed right. What a dismissive comment.

I am have spent hours with both Apple and Verizon tech support over this issue. I am now on my 3rd phone and 2nd new SIM card

Nice to see I am not crazy and that others are experiencing this same issue.

Tech Support is dumbfounded with this issue. Everyone I have spoken with tells me they never heard of this issue. But clearly others are experiencing it too.

Nothing has fixed it in the countless hours I have spent on the phone. Agree with others must be a software issue. I generally just keep my phone on silent/vibrate now because that sound drives me nuts. Hoping they get an update for this very soon.

It was, though in my case I hear this only sporadically, even SMS messages do not do this every time for me on my XS Max, just once in a while.

If yours does it for every SMS that comes in, that's quite different and a nice repeatable case Apple should be made aware of as its no easier for them to fix an issue that is sporadic.

I still wonder what other background operations many of you have going on, simply because on my phone I will hear it, but it will occur perhaps once out of every 75 SMS messages I receive.

Some of you seem to be having it happen repeatably, even every time.

Is that indeed true - is it every time, most of the time, or sporadically?

I know it's often enough that there is the posted You Tube video if it occurring.

The simple fact is that the $700.00 plus phones that Apple has been selling do not operate as they should, and there are 7 pages of people testifying to that. We are not only disappointed about that fact, but also that Apple hasn't manifest to any of us, any answer or effort to correct the issue. And, you, despite 7 pages of people complaining about the same issue, seem to be constantly trying to convince us that it is a 'non-issue' or that it is something we are doing. The reason Apple was able to build such a huge following was great innovative products and great service, ... now Apple leaves us to put our issues out in "Communities' and leaves us feeling ignored. And the only reason we continue with Apple is that we have no choice. We have become dependent on cell phones and the industry itself, all of the manufacturers, have developed a unified front of, "This is what you get, like it or don't, it is what it is."

I have an iPhone X, got it pretty much as soon as it was released. About a 9 months after having it, this problem started. It was only once a week or so. Now it's almost every text I receive, regardless of whether or not it's coming from another iPhone or Android. I've been to the Apple store (just last week) and they insist they've never heard of this. All of my hardware appears to be working fine. I have no apps running in the background, I even went through and deleted almost every app on my phone. I'm extremely p.o.ed that I spent $1000 on a phone and it can't even handle getting a text. My son has a 7 and does not have this problem. My daughter has an X as well and does not have this problem. Both are up to date with the newest IOS. If I didn't have Apple everything else, I would be switching to an Android.

It happens nearly daily. And can certainly occur a few times in a day.

It happened this morning when I received a text alert from Verizon that my phone bill was due.

The follow up notification sound a minute later came in normal.

My phone was on, but not in use and locked. I had the following apps running in the background (recently opened apps): Messages, Camera, Calendar, Settings, Safari, Photos, Sudoku, Phone, Contacts, and Amazon.

I previously had the iPhone 8 when this issue started. I upgraded to the X and the issue persisted. I've changed alert tones and tried everything short of factory reset and starting fresh. The issue never happens with iMessage. However, when I receive messages from non Apple products or alerts from schedule software like work schedules it happens. Apple has basically told me that I'm hearing things. Has anyone had any luck fixing this issue?

I have an iphone 7 and the strange strangled / shaking sound started after the last update, I believe. If it was a person I would recommend not speaking at all and to go to a doctor.

It happens when I receive messages or calls from android phones, not iphones. For some reason those phones affects the speaker sound.

I have tried the suggestions. They do NOT solve the problem at all.

Thank you, Dontrai. This sounds helpful.

If this is the cause of the issue, it's good information for developers, but the first part isn't a viable solution. People WANT to be able to use 1 account for all their devices. How would you share photos, messages, music and apps you've purchased between devices? As an example, if I had to have a separate email account for each computer I own, I'd be irritated - email would no longer be as useful.

The last part of your message - the bonus tip - you wrote, "then, sign back in your account but don’t sign in with your email for iMessage or FaceTime, just use your phone number." I'm missing where I sign in using just my phone number. Can you explain this part a little more?

Mine iPhone 7 Plus just did the echoing notification and it was from a android phone (green message). And then before I could look at the message, it did a normal notification ring 5 seconds afterwards. This has been happening for months and never thought it was a major issue but it starting to irritate me. Someone please fix this issue
