No one here could possibly tell you, but I can say that I personally know the issue goes back to at least iOS 10.
I have the exact same problem with my iPhone 7 Plus/128G. It’s driving me crazy.
Any workaround solution?
Did that already. Worked a couple days, then messed up again. It’s a software issue.

Yet it’s happening to me using “alert tones” and the default sound for receiving SMS, therefore this is not solution. :(
My iphone 8, sometimes has the same problem, distorted notification sound.
like everyone else has mentioned, this has been happening for a while but I feel like it’s only when I get text from people without an iPhone. Anyone else notice this?

Mine is only with 1 friend and he has android, it’s always done this to me since my iPhone 5 and only with his number, any other android numbers and iPhone numbers work fine.
