Keyboard Broken after Sleep

When my iMac wakes up after sleep the keyboard takes a LONG, LONG time to respond to keystrokes. If I type a vowel, a small popup panel appears with possible versions of the character with possible diacritical marks. After that it takes many seconds for the text field to respond to keystrokes and soon they aren't handled, instead they generate a sysbeep. The only way to fix this is by restarting my Mac. This has been happening since at least 2015.

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2011), OS X Yosemite (10.10), 10.10.1

Restart the computer holding down the command - option/alt - P - R keys before the gray screen appears. Continue to hold until you hear the startup chime for the second time. You may need to do this 2-3 times.

Reset NVRAM/PRAM

Try a SMC reset. The article covers when this is required, but doing this will not affect anything.

Reset SMC

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. Please post back on whether or not this worked. Also try the Safe Mode. Please post back on whether or not this worked.
