Easy-peasy
1. Unscrew battery cap on left side of keyboard using a penny, dime or nickel (quarter may be too thick).
2. Dump out old AA batteries.
3. Insert 2 new AA batteries + end first (look on back of battery housing if you forget orientation).
4. Screw cap back on using coin used in step 1.
Note: You'll probably have to re-pair the keyboard to your Mac.
BTW, I use Eneloop rechargeable batteries.

The green light on mine is directly above the Eject key and in line with the center of the power button on the right end of the batter compartment. It isn't on after the keyboard and Mac has established a Bluetooth connection. My keyboard is a model A1314 with a 2009 copyright date.
Just to confirm: you have the "Apple Wireless Keyboard" A1255 or A1314, correct? Or do you have the "Magic Keyboard" A1644? The former was released August 2007 and discontinued October 2015, while the latter was released October 2015 and is still current.
The "Apple Wireless Keyboard" uses AA batteries (3 in the A1255; 2 in the A1314) while the "Magic Keyboard" has a built in Li-Ion battery and is charged using a Lightning USB cable.
Must be the A1324 (why can’t I copy paste?); mine takes 2 AAA batteries. Did it have a green light? Can’t find any start date on my original iPad, but I ordered them both on the ipad’s First order date. Thanks for the input!
Do you have a Mac? What happens after you put new batteries in the keypad and click on the Bluetooth icon? Do you get the keyboard showing up in the drop-down menu saying either "Connect" or Disconnect"?
Oh, the Original iPad was released in April 2010.
Jim, I just pulled out my iPad Mini 3 and paired it with my keyboard. Once the iPad & keyboard "found" each other, in the Bluetooth setting of my iPad the device showed up as "Apple Wireless Keyboard". Tapping on that gave me the 4-digit code to enter on the keyboard to finish. Try doing this:
1. On your iPad, make sure Bluetooth is turned on.
2. On the keyboard press and hold the power button for about 5 seconds.
3. See if "Keyboard" shows up under the Devices section of the BT setting page.
4. If it does, wait to see if it changes to "Apple Wireless Keyboard"
5. If it does, tap on "Apple Wireless Keyboard" and see if you get a 4-digit code
6. If you do enter it and hit the Return key.
If you end up connected and can use the keyboard, but never saw the green LED, then the LED must have died.
Thanks. I am concluding the keyboard has died. No green light, can’t connect to keyboard from the Bluetooth menu, can’t be discovered from any other device. Sigh...
Thanks much for everyone’s helps and suggestions.
Thanks. Another case of being outwitted by apple’s “lighter shade of pale” for their documentation.
Alas, no sign of the green power light I see mentioned.
Thanks. If mine has one, I cant find it. I ordered it with my original iPad on its release date. Guess I’ll ask the Apple store to see if they can find any life in the thing.
Sorry, 2AA, not AAA.
