Steam games on my Mac have stopped working

Only recently, and I'm not sure why (could possibly be Steam updated) my computer can no longer run any Steam games. My computer is an old Mac Pro running on Yosemite, but even being so old it should be okay to run this stuff. The error message I get is -

Dyld Error Message:

can't resolve symbol _MTLCreateSystemDefaultDevice in /Users/admin/Library/Application Support/Steam/Steam.AppBundle/Steam/Contents/MacOS/gameoverlayrenderer.dylib because dependent dylib #6 could not be loaded

I'm not great with computers and have looked in that folder and everything is still there, so I'm pretty stuck on what to do.

Mac Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

If your computer can run Yosemite, it can run El Capitan.

El Capitan

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite/El Capitan.

To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.

iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) model number 7.1 or higher

MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) model number 5.1 or higher

MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3.1 or higher

MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) model number 2.1 or higher

Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) model number 3.1 or higher

Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) model number 3.1 or higher

Xserve (Early 2009) model number 3.1 or higher

Your Mac needs:

OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed

2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)

8 GB or more of available space

Check to make sure your applications are compatible.

El Capitan 10.11 Compatibility information

Also check to make sure there is a compatible driver for your printer.

Do a backup before installing, preferable 2 backups on 2 different drives.

What have you tried, so far, to resolve this yourself?

For example:

  • Have you tried removing, and then, re-installing the Steam app?
  • Did you verify with Steam support that the latest version works with OS X Yosemite and that your Mac Pro meets all of the system requirements to run it?
  • Have you posted to the Steam support forum?
