How to open 7z and other archive files on OS X?

Are zip archives backwards compatible? If I open a zip created in High Sierra, will I be able to open it on a much older system? I have an external drive where I'm storing a bunch of very old apps, and I thought I'd zip them up to save space. But I'm wondering if I'll be able to unzip those archives on old Macs running OS 10.4, OS 8.1, and OS 7.1. Cheers!

When in doubt, look in the Mac App Store. The free Unarchiver handles .7z and .rar among many other archive file formats.
