HomePod set volume from Home

If I start playback on a HomePod by tapping the unit icon in Home App, I can only adjust volume of playback by asking Siri to set volume or go the the HomePod unit and press + or - buttons. Is there no way to do volume control from my iPad within the Home App or elsewhere?

Yes, I can go to AirPlay setting and select the HomePod for playback and control volume, but this will mean replacing the audio playback I'm currently listening to.

It would be a nice addition to Home App to be able to control HomePod volume from inside the App.

See Remote control for HomePod, not using AirPlay. Use Feedback - HomePod - Apple to suggest the addition of a volume control in the Home app. Personally I also think it should be a lot more obvious that tapping a HomePod there will act as pause/play.
