Updating to High Sierra- frozen

I tried to update my MacBook to macOS High Sierra & it gets to about 37 minutes & won't go any further. It says there is an error & to restart to begin diagnostics. I have done that & no problems. I have tried to reinstall- can't. I have tried to force quit with the control/ command/ escape keys & nothing happens. I have no menu bar at the top. I can't tell any of the operating system or any relevant specs as I can't get to them.

Any help on how to stop/delete/quit this download would be most appreciated.

Check the disk for errors.

Startup while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you should be able to access the built in utilities in OS X Recoveryto repair the startup disk and restore OS X.

(not the same as diagnostics)

I have run the disk utility & after first aid- the operations were successful. I only have 720.3 MB free- do you think that is my problem- that I don't have enough room to install the High Sierra? If so how do I quit the installation?

Hmmm, try CMD+q or CMD+period, if those don't work then I suppose the power button.

Oh yes, good call, you need minimum of 20-30 GB for simple operation of McOS.

And just for Mojave install...

12.5GB of available storage

Okay great! Now how do I quit the install? I turned off my wifi, but it didn't make any difference. I still have the download screen on my computer screen.

I did the steps listed above and it worked for me. I had tried all the tricks that I could find on the internet & finally the cmd+q worked to cancel the update. Hope it works for you too.
