Can't login to iCloud via system prefs

Like so many others on here I haven't been able to log into iCloud via the system preferences.

1/ Enter the username

2/ Next

3/ Enter password

4/ Next

5/ Seems to be working...

6/ Back to step one.

The password is correct and allows login on icloud.com account via a browser.

I created a new iCloud account, couldn't log into that either.

On the same Mac Pro laptop in a different user account there is no problem.

Not sure if the problem is related but the Email account will no longer work to a non apple domain on iMap. I can set up this email account without any problems on the other user on this laptop.

I have tried reinstalling Mojave. No change.

Are there any fixes for this other than deleting the relevant user account and recreating?

Solution found!

First, full back up

I set up a new user on the laptop. Signed into the original Apple ID, all worked nicely.

Signed into the original user and transferred all the stuff that wasn't already saved to iCloud.

Returned to the new user, set up the email, that now works.

This turned out to be a lot less work than many of the other solutions I have found.

I have now deleted the old user account. Interestingly it was impossible to use the option to save home folder.

Try the Safe Mode in your normal user account.

Safe Mode - About

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

Thanks for your response.

I have already tried in Safe Mode, still can't log in.

I'm in the process of setting up a new user on the laptop and I have already set up a new Apple ID. It will be a pain transferring everything across from the old user to the new, permission problems anticipated, but it may be the only way.

Is it still worth trying the app?
