Spacebar double space (Macbook Pro 2018)

Hi Apple Forum,

I've had my Macbook Pro 2018 since August and have been noticing an issue with the spacebar where I often type double spaces when I press the spacebar only once. Also, the spacebar is not registering sometimes in very specific spots. I have been typing with other keyboards and not been experiencing this issue.

I have seen that people suggest turning off key repeat settings which I have done fully but that doesn't seem to affect the space key for some reason. Is this is a software issue or hardware? It is very frustrating and I have seen other posts about it but very minimal support.

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2018, 4 TBT3), macOS Mojave (10.14.1)

I've tried a tonne of things, including the Key Repeat and Delay keyboard settings. Then in frustration I just pressed down firmly on the space bar, running my finger along the whole length of the bar, still pressing firmly...and you'll notice I'm currently not experiencing any double spaces. Give it a go?

wait - so you've had four different laptops that had the same problem? Ridiculous. My computer was having this same problem just a few months after I first bought it, so I got the keyboard replaced (cost me 400 pounds!) and now it's having the problem again. I guess I'm just going to get an external keyboard instead of paying to get this fixed or replaced, if it's just going to have the same problem.

Wait... You PAID to fix it? It should be included in the warranty, since it's a WELL KNOWN issue with Apple laptops. My first 3 replacements were done between the first 15 days, but since after changing the 3rd one I bought a keyboard cover hoping to avoid the problem, it actually took around 2 months for the problem to show up on my current Macbook. I've been in contact with Apple that apparently won't replace or refund my purchase for this one, and now they are seeing what it can be done. Probably a repair, but I can't help but wondering how long it will go until the problem will show again.

Are they expecting me to send my macbook for repair every two weeks? What should I use during the repair? Purchase another Macbook that will show the same problem? Or maybe purchase a laptop from another company? This is ridiculous. I can't believe that after the shitstorm with 2015 models they didn't make sure to solve this problem completely.

The common consensus in this thread - including mine - is that a replacement keyboard is required. Neither the software resolve and compressed air clean were a permanent fix for me. I've just got my MBP back from the service centre good as new. Frustrating and inconvenient, but at least now this issue is resolved for me - for who knows how long. I am now using a keyboard cover in the hope it will stave off the dust/debris problem. The service centre told me Apple have upgraded me warranty to THREE YEARS so that's a small bonus. It shouldn't be required at all though, the price you pay for these things.

My mid 2018 MacBook Pro 13 inch is "resting" three weeks now for service, cause of the double space problem and the "death" of the space bar key after some hard pressings for it to become functional and stop annoying my typing... The technicians informed me that they are waiting for the replacing mechanism from the provider and I'm forced to work with my old MacBook Pro late 2011, which I passed to my son. Why is Apple insisting on this keyboard, causing us problems and delays concerning computers we spend so much money for? They should immediately release a free lifetime recall-service program, find a final solution about this keyboard malfunction and show some respect for thousands of customers with this problem (customers that started from complaint posts and ended up with lawsuits) not stating that the problem is limited in a few cases and trying to hide their ongoing butterfly keyboard failure. P.S. I also have heard about the "Unshaky" app and I'm about to install it once I get my computer back from service, since I'm almost sure I'll face such keyboard problems again, and I'm not willing to "park" a 2500€ computer in service for three weeks every three months. Apple, please, do something about this now!!!

Having used “unshaky” now for a full working week I can tell that it definitely helps but not fully solve the issue. It is difficult to find the sweet spot for the delay you need to set for your spacebar (if it is too low you get double spaces, too high you cannot type fast as the space won’t be triggered). It decreased faulty spaces by more than 80% I would say. Still this is not acceptable looking at the hole in my bank account...

Thank god I'm not the onlyone with this problem. I'm actually typing slowly and carefully right now to try to demonstrate the problem. This usually helps prevent it but as you can see there are quite a few double spaces in this sentence. Anyway, I have no idea if I have any sort of warranty here. I bought the MBPro in late 2018 so I would assume there's some way I can take this in? Have others been able to take in a mac and not been charged to fix this? It's getting so bad the computer is barely useable at time, at least when I have to type a lot.

Well you may not be alone but this is not a widespread issue either. I have a 2018 MBP and I have not experienced such an issue and I'm a touch typist. My business is ran on my MacBook Pro daily typing.

Not really sure this is an issue that would require a repair. Just take it to Apple. You're under warranty for 12 months from your date of purchase. If Apple performs a repair there will be no charge as long as you have no damage to the keyboard or any spills on the computer.

Can anyone confirm if they will fix this issue outside of warranty? Mine ran out a few months ago. It's clearly not 'wear and tear' as everyone is having the same issue. If they have a fix then this should be a recall.

This mac cost a small fortune and now just 18 months in and its buggered - I have to go back through every sentence I type and remove the double spaces! I write copy - this isn't cool.

"disappointing considering how much this laptop is."

Your thinking is very narrow. You're equating price with perfection. They don't go together. You're suggesting that an expensive laptop should be 100% perfect and problem free. While that's the way it should be that type of thinking is not realistic with mass produced products. You can't get perfection on a $100k car.
