Mac Cleanup Pro Scam??
I purchased a MacBook Air one week ago. Last night I believe that I got scammed by PayPro Global and Premium Techie. The other day I mistakenly clicked on a link to an Adobe Flash Player download. I immediately started receiving a pop-up notice from an app called "Mac Cleanup Pro" that my computer had been infected and that it needed to be cleaned. As I had not downloaded this app, I believed that it had been installed by Apple. When I clicked on the button to start the "clean-up", I was taken to what I believed to be the McAfee website and was offered the Mac Cleanup Pro for $118.80. I went ahead and made this purchase and when the transaction was completed, I was directed to call to activate the software. I then ended up talking to a customer support person at Premium Techie. He requested remote access to my computer and then went ahead and "identified" a number of malware issues and infected files. After speaking with him for quite some time he convinced me to purchase technical support of $295. He then claimed that my computer was so badly infected that he needed to have his supervisor work with me. The supervisor then came on and discovered that my firewall had been turned off. He evidenced this to me by continually showing me that the Chrome web browser was not loading properly due to the malware. He then tried to sell me three different network security applications (Mac Space Reviver, Mac Adware Cleaner, and Unpollute My Mac) for $600. I am glad to report that I cut off the madness at this point. After much discussion back and forth and a further conversation with another supervisor I finally got off the phone. I assumed that I had been scammed and researched online which security software was best for a Mac and purchased Bitefinder. The Bitefinder scan identified and blocked a number of malicious files. So, at this point, I am looking for guidance on "next steps" to secure my computer. Thanks.
