MacOS upgrade issues

I just bought a MacBook Pro 14.1, which is operating iOS 10.13.4. I'm trying to upgrade to iOS 10.13.6, because I want to learn how to use XCode 10 (I can't find any earlier versions). Every time I try running the update, I get this error message:

"macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 Update can't be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for the update."

I've already tried running the update in Safe Mode and I still get the error message.

Would someone be able to help me figure this out? Is there a reason that the upgrade wouldn't install on my laptop?

The version of MacOS installed on a new Mac is often a special "custom" version, enhanced by adding the Drivers of the Mac's NEW hardware.

As such it may resist being updated by the 10.13.6 Updater because it is not the "stock" 10.13.4, but a custom build, identified by a different build number.

You should be able to do a "re-Install-in-place" of MacOS 10.13, which will give you all the latest versions, with the latest features available, and not disturb your files or added Applications.
