Hello, Ridered423!

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities, it's great to have you here. I understand that messages aren't working as expected on your new iPhone XR. I would be happy to help with this.

I would start by making sure that we're covering the basics here. This article has all of the information to make sure that you are able to add your phone number for use in Messages: Add or remove your phone number in Messages or FaceTime .

Set up your phone number

On your iPhone:

  1. Go to Settings > Messages and make sure that iMessage is on. You might need to wait a moment for it to activate.
  2. Tap Send & Receive. If you see “Use your Apple ID for iMessage,” tap it and sign in with the same Apple ID that you use on your Mac, iPad, and iPod touch.

  3. In the "You can receive iMessages" section, make sure that your phone number and Apple ID are selected.
  4. Go to Settings > FaceTime and make sure that your phone number and Apple ID are selected in the "You can be reached at" section.
As you can see above, I've also copied a section of that article here for your convenience. I would still recommend pulling it up and making sure everything is set up to have those messages working with your phone number.

I hope that this helps you out.

Best regards.
