Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
After updating my iphone 7+ to ios 12.1, I can no longer export movies into my Macs. Well, Photos says they have been sucessfully imported, but with a zero-second length and blank thumbnail, and while providing a popup warning that the files are in an unrecognizable format. I have tested this on two iMacs, both using El Capitan 10.11.6.

Go to Settings > Camera > Formats and change to Most Compatible. Your iPhone is probably set to take video in the new HEVC format which will only read without a converter of some sort on macOS High Sierra or later.
