Remove message from Smart Mailbox

I have some messages that Mail put in a Smart Mailbox but they don't really belong there. How do I remove individual messages from a not-so-smart mailbox but not delete them from my master inbox?

iMac, macOS Sierra (10.12.6)

Why don't you try editing the smart mailbox criteria using the steps in the article above? If that doesn't work, Mail/Mailbox/New Mailbox and create an On My Mac mailbox. Move the original message there and then delete the smart mailbox. Set up a new smart mailbox using the desired criteria.

If you change a message in a Smart Mailbox—such as marking the message as read or unread, or moving or deleting the message—the change is reflected in the mailbox where the message is stored.
