Quicktime Buffer Overrun Detected Error with Vista

I downloaded the latest version of QT when I got my new computer two weeks ago, and it looks like everything installed correctly with QT, but I cannot playback any of my .MOV files. I get an "Buffer Overrun Detected!" error window, and it sometimes shuts down Windows completely. Any ideas?

Honestly, I don't see this problem "answered" until Quicktime is working as it is meant to. I also have the same stupid error message when I try using quicktime. All I have to do is click on the .mov file, open with and choose quicktime...and then I get that message. There have been a few instances that QT didn't come on at all. sigh I have been following this topic and have attempted to use the possible solutions people have poste, such as downloaded the vista codecs, but there was some kind of error with the file when I attempted to install it. Quicktime works on the internet but I'm just about to say screw it and convert my .move files to something else. My comp is up to date with the necessary software and drivers and I keep this bugger as clean and simple as possible but all options seem to be for naught except annoying the living be'gesus out of me! Hey QT techies! Get your buns in gear so we can play our movies again!! sigh QT used to work on my laptop but after a few updates and a newer version of QT...I'm buggered. Sometimes Support works and other times...you go cross-eyed! 😝

Any other bright ideas?

Off to find a .move to mpeg converter..

I agree that this issue not being resolved yet is insane. I'm having the same issue but I'm not running an Nvidia Graphics card. I'm running a Radeon HD2900XT. Quicktime 7.2 is pretty much worthless for viewing .mov files that are local. Way to force me to use Windows Media Player... but at least it WORKS, unlike Quicktime... Exactly why did I pay for a Pro license to broken software?

I think Microsoft did something in a recent update to cripple Quicktime. I bought my Vista laptop last Feb. and Quicktime had been running up until a few days ago. There are updates almost every day so I do not know which one is the culprit. Unfortunately for me my astronomy software needs Quicktime to run so I now cannot do any research or run my telescope!! Thank you Mr. Gates.

I’m not a regular poster on any boards, but I too suffered from the QuickTime playback issue (running Vista Ultimate on a mobo with VIA chipset, not nVidia.) Fortunately, I spent ONLY a week banging my head, until I found this thread. The breakthrough was testing a .mov playback on a USB or non-SATA CD drive, as others here have suggested, and NOT having the problem.

The solution for me involved installing VIA HyperionPro v513a chipset drivers in a certain order (don’t ask me what order finally worked. I don’t have a clue.) My SATA drives had worked fine with all other apps, but for some reason not with QuickTime, and apparently needed the very latest drivers to fly. All is peachy now. Hope this helps…

I have just developed this issue with Quicktime as well. It was working fine up until yesterday. I am using a program to rip dvd's down so I can watch them on my ipod. The program was working fine until yesterday. The program was bought so I know it is probably not a trojan, virus, malware issue. I did a scan just in case and everything was ok. The program rips the program down and when I go to check it it's working fine but when I go to close Quicktime that is when I get the buffer overrun error. The program is supposed to put the movie in my itunes library but because of the buffer problem it has stopped working. Unless I solve this problem my new program won't do me any good. I have Vista xps 410 and it has a nvidia 7300 le driver. I updated all my stuff thru windows update, updated all the drivers. Nothing helped. I'm not that tech savvy when it comes to this stuff. Can anyone offer a suggestion or help in anyway? It'd be much appreciated.

Ever since updating Quicktime I've had the buffer overrun error thing. Can someone tell me where I might find the previous version available for download? Everything worked prior to the installation of the new version 7.2. Stands to reason that if I go back to the previous version it might fix the problem. Anyone know where to get the download of the previous version?

Confirmed on Vista.
Seems to happen randomly and related to the list of last played movies... But also disabling this feature there are random crashed and memory corruption problems thrown by QuicktimePlayer.exe. Sometimes it even throws BSOD (!!). Useless to say that when I don't run QT the system and my video drivers are rock stable even after 2-3 days of work and after running games, emulators, browsers etc. etc.! Just to confirm it's a mere QT problem. I uninstalled it since I found http://movies.yahoo.com that replaced my Apple trailers link 😉
It's a shame, Apple!

I have the same issue. I copy the files to my external usb drive and it works perfectly. I run any mov or purchased tv show from itunes or quicktime and they stutter and stop and don't sync properly with the audio.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes and QuickTime many times.

I'm using AMD CPU EVGA MB with NForce 4 chipset. I've updated to the latest nvidia drivers for the chipset and for my video card (8800 GTX).

AMD 3800+x2
4GIG RAM
nForce 4
8800 GTX
Windows Vista 32bit.
