QuickTime 7.1.5 Gets ? in Q; can not play

Hi,
I down loaded QT 7.1.5 upgrade. Now all I get is a Q with a ? in it and can not play video or audio.

Any body know how to correct this? and what happened? bug in upgrade?

I deleted orginal, downloaded new copy several times, still no video/audio.

Thanks.

go fish 67,

I believe that this only fixes 'flash' issues...if you navigate to my website

http://web.mac.com/bonar_bulger/iWeb/Site/Lectures/D30F5F3B-4C4D-4303-8A85-EB643 9F7DC98.html

where I have several podcasts the "Q" appears - pre update these podcasts worked flawlessly - moreover, they work in every other browser.

Can you let me know if you are able to get them to work with your 'fix'

Thanks,

B!

since my last update i had the same problem both in safari and firefox, ?Q.

i fixed the problem by going in system preferences choosing quicktime - under advanced tab choosing MIME settings - choosing "use defaults" - then logging out, after logging back in it should fix the problem. it worked for safari, firefox off and on.

Yes,

I have done those things and yes it did fix any thing with flash content - however it did not fix everything - were you able to see/play the podcasts available here using safari:

or do you also get the big "Q"?

Remember that this site worked fine pre update and works with all other browsers

let me know as it will help me determine where the problem lies.

thanks

B!

Chas.love,

There are two issues here,

You can enable quicktime to view flash through the step outlined in this thread. However, I have yet to find a solution for the non-flash based quicktime problem...(although this appears to be a Safari specific issue as other browsers i.e. Firefox, Camino, internet explorer all allow quicktime to operate normally).

I think Apple will need to provide a new update. In the mean time try the other browsers. I especially like Camino - designed for mac by the Firefox people.

I had this problem so I followed advice on Macfixit and downloaded the latest player directly from the Apple site rather than the update that came through. After a restart it appears to be working ok (fingers crossed).

I downloaded 7.1.6 and it caused alsorts of problems - I thought that it was something to do with RealPlayer, which I downloaded in oreder to listen to PlanetRock but this can't really be the case as I switshed to fireFox and guess what? No problems at all. So if you want my advice just use FireFox. If Apple can't get their own software to work with their browser then why use it?

Hi BonarB:

You are partially right. In my case and with the latest Security upgrade v. 1.1, the following happened:

— Old Lombard Powerbook 400 mhz/10.3.9 works fine with SAFARI, FIREFOX and CAMINO.

—iBook 800 with 10.3.9. DOES NOT work with FIREFOX (dreaded Q ?), but works fine with SAFARI and CAMINO! Did uncheck "Flash media" in FIREFOX but to no avail.

All apps and updates are the latest.

Yes - I am another user with same Q? error/problem - I did same- uninstalled, deleted, went back a version (unable to) reloaded QT and still videos on some sites will play - and embedded into some other sites (like YOU TUBE) will not play - I hope a security patch fixes this.

A MIRACLE JUST HAPPENED, seemingly. A friend was over with his mac laptop. when he went to yahoo mail with the new beta version of Yahoo, each email has the little box to the left. When I had gone to beta, no box on the left. So I tried beta again. No box. This is the most wonderful part for me... when I clicked on go back to previous version of Yahoo, it asked me to please explain why. I wrote the same thing as last time when I tried: "no little box to the left of each email. Then I noticed another plea: "please let us show you some new stuff. I clicked on that. Well, it said to be able to use that tutorial I needed one of the new versions of Adobe Flash Player 9. Since my eMac is a PowerPC G4 it needed the one that goes with it, not the intel version. Well I downloaded the Adobe Flash Player 9 and PRESTO!!!! QT now functioning normally again. Thanks to everyone for all your efforts, energy, assistance and LOVE.

This worked for me, THANKS! I had not experienced any problems on my iMac, but my MacBook had been showing the -?- in the middle of the Quicktime logo on some videos. The first time, several months ago, I took it to the Apple Store for Tech Help. This time, I did as you suggested, went into Quicktime in Preferences, unchecked Flash Media under Advanced/Misc., and the Audio Midi was already set at those numbers. This solved the issue for now.

I figured it out. I promise this will work!

1) Open Quicktime System Preferences
2) Go to Advanced Panel
3) U-N-check Enable Flash
*4) Click Mime Settings
*5) Under Mime Settings: Click Restore Defaults

I believe Step 5 is the Key, Not 3.

Worled for me....(Remember this is all in System
Preferences -- not quicktime player preferences)

Peter,

I just wanted to say thank you so much for finding out the solution. I tried the five steps you suggested and QT now works perfectly (so far). I can now enjoy sites like You tube once more. I owe you one m8. Have a virtual pint on me.

Cheers 😀
