iTunes 7.6 problems

I upgraded to iTunes 7.6 today. Now when I try to access the iTunes Music Store, iTunes hangs in the middle of accessing the store. It becomes completely unresponsive. Not even a force quit works to kill it, so far I have only been able to restart the system to make the program quit. I will see if I can find the process and kill it with a kill -9, but to this point version 7.6 appears to not be able to access the iTunes store on my computer. Anyone else with this issue?

Sounds to me like Apple may have released some software that wasn't quite ready yet. Wouldn't be the first time, but usually they are better than this.

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I also just fired up iTunes 7.6 for the first time today. I have my library on a network hard drive. iTunes apparently needs to read information from movie files on a frequent basis. (checking expirations?) Unfortunately for me, I had a Quicktime file there from iMovie that referenced a very large iMovie project that I am working on. Using the Activity Monitor I was able to inspect the iTunes process. Scrolling down the list of open files, I found that quicktime file was the one open while iTunes hung for about an hour with each activity I attempted.
At the end of the next hours wait I quit iTunes, deleted the offending .mov file and restarted iTunes.
Note: the first time I canceled out of iTunes it left an empty iTunes Library file and had copied the old version to the "Previous iTunes Libraries" directory. I duplicated this old version and moved it to replace the now empty Library.
Also note that my time stamps for the iTunes Libraries are now about 6 hours off! Example: The backup iTunes Library showed a timestamp of 2:58 am when it was actually created at 8:58 am. It's as if I were in England (GMT) and looking at an EST timestamp.
It seems to play OK now. But I'm holding off until Apple has fixes before I try connecting the iPod.

I hear your pain. After I updated to 7.6, uploading my ipod classic (160) has been a complete nightmare. It will upload some of the songs until either giving me a device removal message or a message about be unable to read/write data on the ipod. Playing songs is an even bigger nightmare, plays part of the song before either skipping entirely or beachballing and I have to force quit. I tried installing 7.4 since that was the last itunes that actually worked decently for me. It worked for a few hours and I almost got all my songs on my ipod with only about 400 not uploading on the ipod. then I got the beachball-of-death every time I opened itunes and couldn't play anything. Re-upgraded to 7.6 and still have the beachball-of-death when I open itunes so I can't even use it. Repaired disk permissions and repaired the disk volume....which only proved to be nothing more than futile attempts to fix anything.

If you delete your iTunes library files (in your Music > iTunes folder), so that there aren't ANY library files in there, it will open up fine. But you'll have to re-import all of your music/video files, and you'll lose your playlists. Also, if you had them rated or anything like that - that info will be lost.

iTunes works fine for me now, but still won't sync to my iPod. Another thread suggested it had to do with Quicktime 7.4, but I couldn't get that completely out of my computer (and couldn't install 7.3) so I haven't checked that out yet.

Lots of I/O hangs and periodic beachballs here too. It's almost unusable. My music is on an iMac AFP server with a RAID. On Gigabit Ethernet at home, the pauses last for a few seconds. Away from home, iTunes locks up for...I've never seen it unlock. fs_usage shows bursts of music files being accessed while iTunes is unresponsive.

iTunes has a long history of stuttering file buffering, crashes, 3rd party lock-outs (Roku), and a total lack of multithreading. Apple should understand that store purchases drop to zero every time people are forced to revert to an old, unsupported iTunes version.

I posted earlier in this thread about bad playback. iTunes would sometimes play for a couple seconds then hang for a long time (read: minutes) and then play for a few more seconds. I got it to play by unplugging and plugging my external speakers. Not a good solution.

Last night I reinstalled Tiger (10.5) from scratch. Now, of course, everything is working again. This is not a good solution.

I haven't tried the iTMS yet and I'm almost afraid to do it as this computer is the repository of all my music. Okay, I am afraid to try iTMS.

You know, I thought only Windows forced you to reload you OS for one bad application. This is definitely a step backwards.

I too am having woes. Gone away for awhile up pops an upgrade (7.6), I think Apple is intuitive, download. WHAT THE.... I can no longer us AirTunes to my entertainment centre. I troll through the discussion groups. No clear answers. I find a firmware update that is supposed to be the fix. Attempt to install and get this lovely reply - An error occurred while attempting to communicate with the AirPort Express. (-8). For years I have been recruiting most of my family and friends to Apple with its ease of use and reliability.

Anybody have some fresh ideas?

I just updated to 7.6 as well and the first time I opened it, it froze. I forced quit, reopened and it was fine, but all my music, purchase history, and play lists are gone. I tried recreating the iTunes music library.xml file, but nothing changed. I then tried replacing the new iTunes Library with an old one from today listed under Previous iTunes Libraries, restarted iTunes and ran into the same freezing problem. It looks as though the initial freezing was iTunes creating a new iTunes Library file (or at least freezing because of the previous one). Still no answers from Apple, though, and I haven't figured out a workaround. The only option right now looks to be to re-import all your music and videos and recreate your play lists.

Have Windows XP. Installd 7.6 and had many similar problems - couldn't import music, couldn't access the internet, outrageous CPU usage, etc.

After reading through all the suggestions listed, this is what I did.
1. renamed the itunes library.itl file. Find it in \Documents and Settings\username\my Documents\My Music\Itunes. I just called it old itunes library.itl.
2. Totally uninstalled Quicktime
3. Downloaded the installer for Itunes 7.6 and Quicktime to my desktop from apple.com
4. Reinstalled Itunes and Quicktime
5. Restarted computer, but had to force a shutdown.
6. Went back to the itunes folder and renamed the newly created itl file.
7. Renamed the old file back to it's regular name.
8. Restarted itunes. Everything is working again.

I do have to say that I only have music files (about 6000) and I've noticed that itunes has slowed down a little, but no more hangups, I can access the internet, import songs, and do everything I used to do, just a little slower. Don't know if all these steps are necessary, but it worked for me. I have shut down normally and restarted my PC a couple of times and it's still working. My thanks to everyone on this site.

It has been an aggravating evening. Hope this helps.
