Dell Latitude D510, Windows XP
This has been happening to me for a few weeks. Same error. Today after it happened again, I unplugged my lightning cable from one USB port in my computer and put it in a different port.
iTunes opened just fine and went through the backup process flawlessly.
Can't say why this fixed it, but it did.
tottally fixed the problem ... you just saved apple from losing a customer ... this syncing system when changing to a new computer is totally unacceptable, but like apple care ... anyway ... thank you 🙂
I got this
when connecting via Wi-Fi. I think I've resolved it without downloading any drivers/purchasing cards and I have a Dell Studio Laptop.
Windows Vista: -
Go to Start Menu and search for "Services"
Look for Apple Mobile Device on your list of services, right-click and press "Stop" to stop the process.
Then right-click and click "Start" to restart the process.
If you've got OCD like me, click the "restart" button as well, although I'm sure this isn't necessary!
Then just to make sure, I rebooted my laptop and hey presto problem solved!
Don't know if anyone else has posted a similar solution, and not sure if this will help anyone else, but thought I'd post it anyway!
:-D
Got it sorted on Windows-7 64 bit!
Uninstalled every Apple related program, ie. iTunes, Bonjour, Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support and Apple Software Update.
And reinstalled them through the iTunes installer.
This solved the problem.

I can't speak for laptops, but I had the same issue when trying to hook up my ipod to my desktop. Plugging the iphone into the back instead of the top/front USB ports did the trick. Only wish I had found this 8 hours ago...
I've tried those options and I still can not get my Windows desktop computer to recognize my ipod in itunes. I've been frustrated with this for weeks. Not happy.
I just got the Iphone 4s and cannot get it to sync with itunes on my new ASUS EEE Netbook. Computer is only 3 months old, Windows 7, and it syncs up with my ipod touch 3g with no problem. I spent hours on the phone with apple support and spent 3 hours in the store with multiple genius' and noone can figure this out. I have tried most of the advice offered here: uninstalled itunes, external usb, new user account, deactivated firewalls and virus software.
Sometimes my computer recognizes the iphone but freezes, sometimes error messages come up including 0xE8000065, at one point they were able to start syncing the iphone but it froze. After 3 hrs I left with them saying they believe it could be a driver issue but they are not comfortable working on pc's. Please Help! I do not want to return the phone but I have spent over 10 hrs troubleshooting this week and I know someone out there can figure this out.
three steps i used to resolve the Error 1604 and 0xE8000065
1. DISABLE ALL ANTIVIRUS AND FIREWALL SOFTWARE (AVG and ZONEALARM are the worst culprits)
2. Update all Apple Software to latest version
3. make sure device is plugged into a MAIN USB port and not an extension or secondary USB port
Voila!
I had the same problem. just needed to update itunes
ok so i have a 3gs with the 5.1 firmware and itunes on 10.5.3 and it recognises the phone but when im syncing it freezes and i have to stop it and everyting on the phone erased now that i try the 0xE8000065 error apears... what can i do to fix it or can anyone tell me where to go to look for more solutions PLEASE!!!
Would someone be able to describe in an easier format for me who is not that smart when it comes to computers? I am getting the error and have switched USB to the back but now I'm not following what the rest of you are saying.
Thanks
8000065 [SOLUTION] Do you have "WiFi Sync" installed?
Start > Control Panel > Search "Uninstall"
Uninstall a Program > WiFi Sync
As soon as the software is removed iTunes should open and show your device.

Hey I called Dell and they said that the problem is deffinatly a software issue. SO if you want help it could be helpful to call them. Obvisouly I called Dell because that is the type of computer I have. If you do and you get help make sure you have your express service code because they really need it. Also don't get stuck having a code that is expired because then they want to charge you$ 89-$129 for help. So there is my advice, post back if you have any luck with this error.
Folks,
I had this problem with my PC (windows 7, 64-bit) and my iPad. After messing with it for a long time, I finally found the answer (bad USB driver). The following two step process should help resolve these kinds of problems more quickly.
The first step is to verify that the iPad (or iPhone) is really connected to your computer. This can be (really) checked using a program called USBDeview. You can get this (very small) program from http://download.cnet.com/USBDeview/3000-2094_4-10614190.html or http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html. Don't worry, it's not Spyware or Malware.
Just run the program and sort on the 'Connected' column. If your iPad or iPhone doesn't show up as Yes (under 'Connected') then your iDevice is not properly connected to your computer. Could be a cable problem. Could be an iDevice problem. Could be a USB hub problem. Note that your iDevice might be listed as what it is (iPad or iPhone) or it might be listed as 'Apple Mobile Device USB Driver' in the 'Description' column.
Apple has a number of ideas to resolve this sort of basic connectivity issue, including switching USB ports, resetting your iDevice, rebooting your iDevice, rebooting your computer, etc. You will need to try them until your iDevice shows up in USBDeview as 'Yes' under Connected.
If you iDevice shows up as 'Yes' under connected, it should also be visible in the Device Manager (found in the Windows 7 Control Panel under Hardware and Sound). You might find it under Portable Devices or it might be under Universal Serial Bus controllers.
The iDevice may or may not show up in the Windows Explorer. On some machines it does, on others it does not. Why is not clear.
If the Idevice is properly known to Windows and iTunes can't see it, then any number of other things could be wrong. Apple has a list. See the very useful page over at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538. Testing shows that the Apple Mobile Device service must be running. Check this using Task Manager (started by right clicking the taskbar). Note that the iPod service and the iphlpsvc service must also be running. These services have different names under the Processes table versus the Services tab of Task Manager.
AppleMobileDeviceService.exe - Apple Mobile Device
iPodService.exe - iPod Service
ItunesHelper.exe - iphlpsvc
Step 4 of http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538 checks if the Apple Mobile Device USB is installed. This is essential and a common source of problems. In at least some cases, Windows will install the 'MTP USB' driver. Indeed, Windows will reinstall this driver if you uninstall it. The MTP USB driver is essentially a Windows bug (possibly caused by Microsoft). You MUST replace the MTP USB driver with the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver. Step 4 explains how to do this. Note that you MUST use the 'Have Disk' approach. Otherwise, Windows will just reinstall the invalid MTP driver.
The Apple doc indicates that you can find the correct driver at C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers. Perhaps this is correct on some systems. You may find the correct driver in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers.
iTunes could make this a lot easier by checking if the iDevice is known to Windows (what USBDevier does) and if the Apple Mobile Device USB driver is properly installed for the iDevice. Sadly it doesn't perform either check. Note that iTunes does if some of the related services (see above) are actually running.
I just simply removed other usb data cables which i had plugged in my pc and connected my phone and it worked!!!
There were no other devices plugged in my pc through usb ports other than mouse and keyboard!
Hello everyone.
I solved this problem by only getting a official apple cable for iphone/ipod touch. Trying with other brand cable gave me this error: (0xE8000065)
