Safari very slow since Gmail upgraded to the new version

I always keep two different browsers open (in this case Safari and Chrome, both of which I also have on the iPhone), so that I can keep my work (G-suite) email and my personal email open at the same time.

Since Google released the "new" Gmail interface, Safari has been unable to handle it. From time to time it shows a tab with the message "Web page is using significant energy. Closing it may improve the responsiveness of your Mac" - and it really does! - or just stops updating. Sometimes refreshing the tab altogether works (although it loads veeeery slowly), sometimes the only solution is to shut down Safari and start a new session.

I thought OS X Mojave would solve the problem, but it still persists. I am using a 2013 Macbook Air with the newest 12.0 version of Safari.

I have tried to clear the cache, cookies, extensions, everything, but the problem is still there. An Etrecheck found Adware in my computer, which it seems I've successfully got ridden of. The problem is not as severe now, but still persists. I am pasting the Etrecheck report below to give a better overview of my current situation:

Any suggestions? Tks!

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later. Please post if this worked or not.

Yes, I saw that new Macbook Airs are coming with 8 GB now...it seems like my good old 2013 pal is starting to suffer a bit.

It still shows some glitches here and there, but its performance was greatly improved by delete the task manager Wunderlist. It was shutting down rather frequently and I've discovered they have stopped updating their app after being purchased by Microsoft. I've switched to Todoist and the computer seems to run better now.

Thank you!

I can't recall having installed MacBooster and I couldn't find this exact file in the Library Opening my user name folder in Finder then clicking on "go to folder" and typing ~/library. Is this where it was supposed to be?

Looking up in Spotlight I've found a MacBooster folder in Users / Shared, but it contained only 2 files:

Boost2.plist

FileData2

Do you believe getting rid of these files will improve computer's performance? The Apple Communities link you've shared mentions the http://www.adwaremedic.com tool. Is it worthwhile to install / run it?

tks

Jan 18, 2019 1:54 PM in response to Eric Root

Malwarebytes found 4 Adware files:

Adware.Spigot in Library/Application Support/AppCommon and Library/Application Support/AppPolicy

PUP. Macbooster, also in Application Support folder.

Let's see if it will help. I am no longer getting the message that one tab is using significant resources from the computer, but webpage reloads with the message "This webpage was reloaded because a problem occured" appear only in Google apps tabs (Gmail, Drive, etc).

Thank you for your help!

Jan 31, 2019 12:26 PM in response to Eric Root

I'm not sure what's going on with my computer, but after a brief, small improvement its performance got much worse. Beachballing became frequent and both Safari and Mail have recently crashed out of the blue. When I move to the other user account, everything works like a charm.

Any ideas how to overcome this situation? I'm not sure about energy hogs, but when the computer freezes for some seconds Memory Clean 2 from FlipLabs shows very short RAM availability (often as little as 40mb).

Tks!

Feb 6, 2019 6:17 AM in response to Eric Root

I've uninstalled Memory Clean and in fact there has been a slight improvement in the computer's performance. Still, there is to much beachballing and the same error "This webpage was reloaded because a problem occurred", specially in tabs open with Gmail.

I've run Etrecheck and it pointed out a major issue of a runaway process "A process is using a large percentage of your CPU". Nevertheless, it seems it couldn't determine which process it was. Here's the full report:
