iPad Pro touch screen intermittent unresponsive

I have the iPad Pro 10.5 inch for roughly 4 months. I started finding intermittent touch issues that have been random. Its extremely bad when playing games where precision touch and timing are critical. Just normal day to day usage for email, web browsing, etc. you would not notice it much unless you attempt to draw in notepad, then I can see how occasionally it does not register touch while sliding a stylus and other times, its like a rapid touch response.

I have performed every single thing I could find from others having the same issue, and from the looks of how many complaints about this, it sounds like either design flaw or iOS issues. I have tried the following:

  • Turn off and on
  • Hard rest/restart
  • Clean the screen frequently
  • Removed the expensive tempered glass Screen protector
  • Switched case to a case that has no magnetic close
  • Use the Apply plug instead of a multi-usb port charger
  • Turning off Bluetooth
  • Turning off Background App Refresh
  • Turning off Multitasking
  • Etc...etc...etc..etc.

Nothing has worked and seeing all the various forums and posts from people, this is a big problem a rather massive quantity of people have with the iPad Pro's. This weekend I have just had it with this very new iPad Pro that is driving me crazy... I hit the forums looking for anything i have no tried and its all the same, nobody knows and many have just given up on iPads, a lot of people have turned their iPads in under warranty only to find the refurbished units they receive all have the same issue. I am right there with them, I have absolutely loved the Apple devices, my house nearly all Apply, TV's, iPhones, iPads, MacMini's, etc.

I was preparing to erase my iPad Pro and send it back, but gave it one more try, i literally went through every single setting, turning off every single feature and hard restart. After that, the issues are so far gone. I may have a pretty much featureless iPad Pro right now, however no more intermittent unresponsive touch, so i suspect its an iOS issue! I have no interest in turning on any settings one at a time until the issue returns, for now hoping it will eventually be resolved and i can turn everything back on, i just need to not deal with this issue for a while as it has nearly turned me away from Apple products going forward. As expensive as these devices are, we should not have these kind of issues.

This is NOT what you are going to want to read/learn, but this is a known issue across all iPad Pro year and models ( even the brand new 2018, 3rd gen iPad Pro models ) and it is starting to affect both the 2018 and 2017 6th and 5th gen 9.7 inch screen iPads, too!!

I am beginning to think that this is a growing issue that is NOT hardware related, but either iOS 11 and/or iOS 12 related bug.

I have a 1st gen, 12.9 inch screen iPad Pro still running iOS 10.3.3 and I am NOT experiencing these recent intermittent touch screen issues.

The best you can do is alert Apple to this growing issue.

this massive problem has nothing to do with overheating. you can see this on absolutely icy cold iPads, on which no program is open. if the problem was solved in your case, you are lucky. but I tend to think that the solution was not because you removed the thermal insulation, but because the lack of a cover allows for normal grounding of electronics. numerous checks make it clear that the problem is related to electrostatics and the presence of grounding.

Are you plugged in or using just the battery?

I just asked the same question last right. However, I think I solved my issue. One of my charger ports is bad even though it was charging my iPad.

Check out the battery with the CoconutBattery app on your computer (download https://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutbattery/). You must plug iPad into your computer, and then open the iTunes before opening the CoconutBattery to check the battery. If the battery capacity under 80%, then take iPad to the Apple store, and have the technician look at it.

Here is my (a bit lengthy) story about this issue:

The problem only happened on the 12.9 iPad, never on iPad Pro 9.7, 10.5 or 11 inch.

It first showed about mid last year on my 12.9 (2nd gen). As I thought it's a software issue, I didn't return it to Apple. However another (unrelated and definitely hardware related) screen issue appeared and Apple replaced this 12.9 2nd gen iPad. I did a full restore from backup to the replacement iPad and the issue disappeared. Short after the 12.9 3rd gen was available I passed on the 12.9 2nd gen to a family member and the issue never appeared again on this 12.9 2nd gen iPad.

I bought the 12.9 3rd gen and did a restore from a iPad Pro 10.5 inch hoping if it would be a software issue I could avoid it that way. For the first few 2-3 months the 12.9 3rd gen worked flawless until the problem appeared on that device.

I was hoping IOS 12.2 would fix the problem bit it didn't. It showed up again after a few days with IOS 12.2

Now comes the weird part. The problems slowly starts to fade away. Whenever it happens, a re-boot (simple off and on) and it works normal with heavy use for 1-2 weeks.

I really have no idea if it's software, hardware or a combination. Indeed one of the strangest device problem I ever encountered.

My 2015, 1st gen 12.9 iPad Pro has never had this issue.

And still does not have this issue running under iOS 10.3.3.

I strongly believe this is an iOS issue and it either started somewhere late in the iOS 11 update cycle and this issue is even more pervasive, since the introduction of iOS 12 last October.

iOS 12. 2 and 12.3 were reported to fix this issue and now some reports of the iOS 12.4 beta has, also fixed this issue.

This touch screen issue is still ONLY affecting a small amount of iPad Pro users across all three model years.

There is still less than 1000 iPad Pro users reporting this issue.

A very small minority when compared to the millions of iPad Pro models sold over the last three years.

This seems to affect 10.5, 11 and 12.9 inch screen iPad Pro models, only.

No reports of the 2016, 9.7 inch screen iPad Pro models being affected by this non-responsive touch screen issue.

No reports, as yet, to whether this is affecting the new 2019, 10.5 inch screen iPad Air 3, or not.

It is best to continue sending feedback about this to Apple here.

Out of curiosity, do you upgrade/update your iDevices over the Air using the built-in wireless iOS Software Update feature or using iTunes on a computer?

My 2c:

I have the 2nd generation 12.9 iPad Pro.

I first encountered this while playing a gpu demanding game.

It suddenly stopped registering any touch input, then it rebooted into a scrambled/checkered green and white screen. I tried a force shut down and reboot, it got up to the lock code, and once entered the checkered screen would return. Frustrated, i turned it off and left it took the next day.

The next day it booted normally but after using it for a couple hours the touch unresponsiveness return. However, no reboots or scrambled screens. I would lose touch responsiveness, and by simply locking and unlocking it for just a second, i would regain responsiveness but for a few seconds only.

I thought this could be happening when either the ipad runs a bit hot or while in a gpu demanding app.

I was able to replicate the issue in demand by alternating between low gpu settings in a game and a high one. With the later, the issue would appear sheet a few seconds. But switching to low settings, the issue would disappear!

To make sure it wasn't the app itself, i downloaded tge antutu benchmarking app since it will force the gpu to run high, and i was right, it happens in the middle of the gpu testing.

I tried all the solutions provided here, but nothing worked.

And to those wondering if iPadOS solves this...

CANNOT be hardware when it affects all years of larger screen iPad Pro models.

This affects 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 10.5, 11 and 12.9 inch screen iPad Pro models.

The only model NOT affected is the 2016, 9.7 inch screen iPad Pro models.

All of these years and models of larger screen iPads cannot possibly have the same hardware issue/s/problem/s.

No way it can be hardware when all these models have different hardware in them, but still have the same non-responsive touch screen issue.

This is CLEARLY an iOS 12 and, possibly, a late iOS 11 issue.

AND this has only been posted here in these official Apple support communities by ONLY about 1000 iPad Pro users.

There are soooo many more iPad Pro users NOT having these issues with the touch screen.

Well guys I think I have finally found a fix!

After 3 replacement iPad pros over the last 8 months and trying almost everything it turns out that all you need to do is go to Settings>Accessibility then disable Tap to Wake and restart your device.

Since doing this 2 weeks ago I have not noticed a single stutter, everything has been smooth.

I suggest that everybody try this for a week or so and report back on here to let us know how it goes.

Same problems with my 11" iPad Pro touch problems

https://youtu.be/sVMdtu7VcfU

  • Rebooting helps for 1 day
  • Fresh reinstall without using a backup helped for 1 week
  • Adaptive touch didn't help at all
  • Currently trying disabling Tap to Wake ... 2 days in, so far so good 🤞

This iPad is the first one of 5 iPads that I hate. Considering to downgrade to the newest iPad Air ... or Pixelbook 😭

Things to try that were mentioned here.

If you use an Apple Pencil, try turning OFF Bluetooth when not using the Pencil.

In Settings app, under General, Accesibility, turn on the Touch Accomodations software button.

You do not have to setup or use this button. Just activate it.

See if either or both of these temporary solutions fix your iPad Pro touch issues.

You may want to do a hard reset of your iPad by holding down both the Home and sleep/wake buttons simultaneously until your iPad goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttons.

See if these temp solutions help, longer term, with your iPad Pro touch screen issues.
