Security Update 2019-001 for High Sierra - Mac can't shut down

I'm using a 2017 macbook with high sierra 10.13.6, and I have downloaded Security Update 2019-001 10.13.6 (and Safari 12.0.3). When I do either of the following:

  • Restart to update
  • Shutdown the computer

The system goes to a black screen (with the mouse, which will move), and just sits there. I left the system in this state for several hours, and there was no improvement. The only way to resolve it is to hold down the power button to force a shut down. When I log back in, the update still has not installed. Is anyone else having this problem? Is there a way to resolve it?

Macbook (2016 or later)

I just got off the phone with Apple Support and they solved the problem, together with their engineering support team. Here was the solution (quoting directly from the engineering support response):

It appears that the LaunchServices database has a mapping issue. To resolve this issue, please open Terminal and run the following:

sudo find /var/folders -name "*.csstore" -delete; sudo reboot

This advice shows us the total incompetence of Apple "Support". It goes along with the lack of quality control.

A "tech" should know what to do when a system hangs, and how to resolve the problem. If I drive off the street and am stuck in a field full of mud, I expect an expert (or an Apple "tech") knows how to tow me back on the street and not telling me "just buy a new car".

I’m having the same problem! Did my update today and left my computer for hours and it is still showing the apple logo and status bar on the white screen. Should I try by holding the power button down or wait a few more hours. Been 3 hours.

I have the latest of MacOS High Sierra on a mid 2010 MacBook Pro. I cannot update to Majave as my computer is too old.

Help!

Ok, did what Christianfrommellingen said and my computer now starts up normally, thanks for that. I still have the dead battery issue and the System Management Control (SMC) issue. Need to bring my laptop to apple to fix those. Honestly, Apple's pro hardware should be better built than this. Especially for the premium we pay.

I can see why all my film and music production friends are moving back to PC's. They are all deserting Mac because of lack of customisation and reliability issues. Dj's and live performers seem to still use Macs, but in the studio and professional environment, its all going PC.

Well - I think they might be running around in circles in the new ring-building...

I tried to install the security update 2019-001 after downloading it from the apple download page (not from the app store, after bad experiences with 2018-003). The update seemed to go smoothly, BUT the app store still shows me that I have to update to (the same) security update 2019-001.

Also I cannot verify if this update is installed or not. The system-report gives me this Build number, macOS 10.13.6 (17G5019). If I check here at Apple https://support.apple.com/de-de/HT201260, they display another Build number: 17G65

I have the identical problem as described by Gideon Simpson in his post of 23 January. Except that I have 2017 iMac that I purchased last fall.

I read through this thread and followed the Apple Support prescription given by Rogue Sound's post on January 31. And, yes, for the first time in a while I was actually able to shut restart the computer without resorting to the power button.

But this solved nothing really. On the next restart attempt, the computer was up to its old tricks again, the eternal black screen with movable mouse arrow.

This inability to reboot obviously prevents me from carrying out the High Sierra Security Update, even if I download it from Mac as christianfrommellingen had suggested. (I should say however that I never did find the folder "macOS installer data" anywhere on my machine.)

So I'm still up a creek.

Does anyone have a better suggestion? Without the ability to reboot gracefully, I assume I don't even have the luxury of re-installing High Sierra or an install of Mojave.

what version iMac do you have (or is it a laptop?)? I have a 21.5” late 2012 model with high Sierra and was having similar security upgrade issues. I tried upgrading to Mojave and it slowed my system down so badly (30-60 minutes to reboot and way too long with the spinning beach ball) I reinstalled high Sierra from a back up. Just curious if my machine is too old to handle Mojave and interested what you have for equipment that worked.
