Backup Gmail in Apple Mail

I use Gmail and have Apple Mail setup to view my Gmail emails. Apple Mail shows the following on the left hand side:

  1. Mailboxes with the following sub-folders: Inbox, Sent, Junk, and Trash.
  2. Google with the following sub-folders: [Gmail]Trash and other folders with names that match the "labels" setup in Gmail.

I use TimeMachine for my iMac backup. The Apple Mail emails under "Mailboxes" are backed up.

The emails under "Google" with the sub-folders do not appear in the Time Machine backup and as far as I can tell, are not being backed up. How can I configure Apple Mail or Gmail so that the emails that are in the Google sub-folders are backed up?

Hi dgford,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities for help today. It sounds like you are wanting to backup email in the Mail app that is usually kept on Gmail. I do understand that backups are important.

Check out: Use Mail on your Mac under "Organize and search". You would need to create mailboxes under "On My Mac" for this mail. Right now it is only being synced from the Gmail site.

I hope that helps. Have a fantastic day!
