My iMac was working fine until I turned it on after a weekend. It is stuck at the very tail end of the load screen. I can't reboot in Recovery Mode because it isn't getting to the point where the Mac "on" sound engages. I've turned it off and off and unplugged it.
What can I do?

Try resetting the NVRAM and also try restarting in Safe Mode. If neither reset works, it's time to take it to your local Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for repair.

It's possible the audio has been muted. Try the PRAM reset to see if it brings back the chime. Keep holding the keys for a minute. I know Apple usually only recommends a shorter time, but I've personally seen instances of requiring multiple resets. If it doesn't chime after a minute, then you should take it in for service.
Just do the resets please.
@rkaufmann87 - all of the instructions I've read for resetting NVRAM/PRAM or restarting in Safe Mode say to wait for the startup sound. If the startup sound never plays, is this an option? Is there any way to do this before the startup sound?
