Hi,
iMovie supports importing from most tape based cameras even if they are not listed on the supported cameras list. Give it a try and see if it works. Here's a link that explains the process.

If it doesn't work, rather than importing directly into iMovie instead use the Image Capture app on your Mac to import to your desk top. From there you can drag your movies into iMovie. Or, you can import into the Photos app and access the movies from the iMovie media sidebar within iMovie. That actually is the recommended way.

Try using a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter to plug directly into your computer.

Try starting the tape playing before you start the import. Sometimes that triggers recognition.

If your Mac still isn't recognizing the camera possibly it is caused by a defective cable or socket. It needs to be a fire wire cable plugged directly into your computer. It is not uncommon for cables or connecting adapters to be defective. You might try changing out your cables and also switching to a different socket on your computer.
You might also try downloading to a friend's computer and see if it works there.

As I understand it you trying to download through a hard drive other than your computer. Correct?
If so, that might be the problem. You can get a thunderbolt to firewire adapter and plug your camera into the Thunderbolt slot on your computer. Amazon sells the adapters but check to make sure you are getting the right one:

Another thing: You might try checking the Optura pi website, or forum if there is one, and see if you can get any advice there.

I tried a second cable still no recognition. I'm running the firewire through a hard drive that has firewire connection because my computer doesn't have firewire... maybe that's why? I seem to remember doing that a few years ago and it working - but it's been a little while...
thanks - but my computer isn't even recognizing the camera...!
?
thanks. still no recognition
yes - I'm trying to use the hard drive as my adapter - firewire from camera into hard drive, usb from hard drive into computer...
will do - thanks!
You are welcome. No guarantee that it will work, but certainly worth a try.

fingers crossed I just ordered the adapter! interesting to see what happens - always tricky to bridge the gap between old and new technologies. how to get those old videos onto new computers!
Good luck with it. I hope it works.
