I am thinking about a desktop for the next purchase, but which one? I spend a lot of time in Second Life

i'm looking for a new mac.....i have a macbookpro, now that is..well, it just can't handle what i need to do...i am thinking about a desktop for the next purchase, but which one...I spend a lot of time in Second Life.....is that just not a mac thing, anymore or can any new desktop handle SL...?

I can't say SL will never write a version that supports Metal although I find that doubtful. And yes, Before High Sierra Macs supported OpenGL so that's why the difference.

As far as how many apps you can run at once, that depends on what they are. 32GBs of RAM should allow you to run the three you mentioned at the same time. I rarely have more than two or three apps open but that's just because I see no reason to.
