After probably messing up my outgoing email settings to fix the email address, I have not been able to send an email. I am on an iMac and use Mail version 9.3. After reading the help menus, I have a problem identifying may email provider. Who is it?

As the header says, I'd like to know who is my email provider? I have yahoo.com for the incoming mail, which works. Is it the same for the outgoing mail.

The outgoing server should be the same email address as the sending account.

Try Mail/Preferences/Accounts /Account Information. Select an account, then go to Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP). From the drop down menu select Edit SMPT server list. If necessary, set up a server for each mail account so that is associated with the e-mail address. Then go to each account and set that server as the Outgoing Mail Server (SMPT). You can click Use only this server if desired.

Looks like I have the correct SMTP Server for outgoing mail. I seem to have two problems, which may have the same solution. When I send an email, I get the message that it cannot be sent because the mailbox is unavailable. I have not figured out how to properly tell the account which mailbox I would be using; should it be the email address? The associated problem is that the account (?) from which the email is sent (sixth line "From") used to be a yahoo account. Now it is only iMail accounts, which are to in the SMTP list.

Thanks for the help. I am still missing something. (Sorry about dragging this on.) I did (and had already done) what you suggested and edited the SMPT server. I could add another account under "Description" and the "Server Name" but I could not add or modify an existing "in use by Account". Is that information necessary? Does it tell which email account (a given email address?) to use? If so, how can I change it? That did not solve the problem.

I still have a question when sending an email about the "From:" line in the header. It gives me the choice of three email addresses (including the one I use to receive email), all of which are not recognized by the server. I find not way to modify that information. Where does it come from? Where is it stored? I have looked all over but could not find it.

So, is there a way to tell the server to use one of these addresses or a way to change these addresses to one the server recognizes.

You are welcome. It has been awhile since I used El Capitan, so I can't remember exactly where you set the incoming/out going servers to assign them to the account.

It might be easier to delete the accounts and add them back. That should reset everything. If you have an emails in your inboxes, select the inbox, then Mail/Mailbox Export Mailbox to give you a backup copy of your emails.
