Trouble Pairing HomePods IOS 12.2

I have 4 homepods (two pairs). I can no longer get them to pair. They were pairing until this past week-end when I upgraded the software to 12.2. I have done factory resets, removed from account, reboots, re-pairing and un-grouping multiple times. After the pairing exercise, one side will play. The side that plays is always the side I created the pair from. If I touch the HomePod that is not playing, it plays different music. However, if I play music via iTunes or AppleTV, both speaker play in stereo. Yet, when done via Siri or from touching either HomePod only one side plays. I have even mixed up the pairs and reset my routers to no avail.

I can see the homepods on my router. They are all on the same network (5ghz) and each has an IP address assigned. When I un-group the pair, either one will respond and play music. When I pair them back again, only one side plays.

My router is on VPN. However, homepods worked before on VPN. When I disable VPN, that does not fix the problem.

I am at a loss. Not sure what the apple servers are doing or if I have hit upon some edge case the firmware can’t handle but, this is maddening. Love my homepods. Want them back.

Welcome any clue from anyone.

i Just set mine up in stereo. At first it wasn’t working, then I was moving them around, setting up left and right, it was all wrong. The new one I just got had such deep bass it was rattling a glass lantern on my table. It was the only one playing. I wasn’t moving my lantern, so I had to move the HomePod, which ended up on the other side of the room, switching places with my other one

I kept swapping , left right, left right. Somewhat entertained with that setting. I figured I’d get them in place first then see if I could get the stereo going.

Then they started working.

Not really located where I planned on having them but oh well.

it can be anything that does the trick.

Try the moving around trick. They are designed to adjust and recalibrate. Lift off the surface, into the air, rock them around or upside down. This has worked for a few people. It takes a few minutes to adjust.

Then ask them them to play music from all homepods to give them some training on syncing up. This method also plays in stereo where you can tap one and it operates both (even if not paired)

i think its just a case of playing with the settingsL Much like we do with our iPhones to fix something, toggle off then back on again
