SOLVED: This simple solution worked for me. I'm running Big Sur with MacBook Air with the M1 Apple silicon.

Turn Off Key Repeat Under Keyboard Preferences.

  1. Click the Apple menu, then go to System Preferences > Keyboard.
  2. Drag the slider to Off.

It really only happens to me in Safari, not Mail. So obviously it behaves differently for different people. I'm trying to train myself to end dictation with any key except Function, which prevents the duplication. However, if dictation stops on its own accord because of the time limit, then it duplicates.

As someone with a manual handicap, I depend heavily on Dictation. The main reason I upgrade from one operating system to a newer one is an attempt to improve it. It just seems to get worse, though, or it introduces new and different problems.

It just did it.

Yes even happens in Google and WhatsApp also on a regular basis & like the previous respondent said it duplicates after you've double check the message & pushed the send button. In those cases the respondent gets a duplicate message and wonders what we were drinking LOL. It's not a laughing matter though...

This is BS and Apple either can't or won't fix the issue.

This is not what we paid for when we purchased an Apple product...

I have found the best way to approach this issue is to manually type something as soon as you can after finishing your dictation. This Will stop the duplication, but it's still a royal pain in the *** and not what we paid for when we purchased an Apple product.

At the moment I have five software related cases sitting in front of engineering with no resolution to any of them in sight.

The oldest is the dictation issue which has been ongoing for over a year and a half.

It's hard to believe, but it seems like Apple doesn't really care to fix the issue...

I am so sick of this issue and have been over this with several people at Apple. It keeps happening every time I text and there seems to be no answer in the near future. Apple put a recording device on my phone for me to record when it starts happening but it never happens when I want it to.

why isn’t Apple fixing this problem for us? This is a big pain in the neck.

I recently started using dictation and I reviewed all of the suggestions here. There is no fix. It occurs in all applications but particularly Safari. I'm using Mohave but it seems to occur in everything since High Sierra. Adding an extra character after each sentence does seem to help. that means I have lots of double spaces now. I guess that's not the worst.

So annoying when trying to reply and her long messages are duplicated. Shes told me she doenst press anything to start the message but does at the end? I don't use Siri so looking for advice thanks

I agree with everything you said. Apologies if you mistook my original reply. I’m having all the problems you are actually. I just happen to recognize mine mostly when I use the email client for replying to emails. It happens in text messages as well. My main annoyance is wondering if Apple even looks at these discussion logs for this kind of data. I’ve been frustrated with this And I’m surprised that this has been discussed plenty of times on their own forum, that you would think by now that they would test this and apply a fix with one of their releases.

As far as I understand it, having participated in these forums since their inception, Apple does not regularly monitor discussions which are strictly for user-to-user support. We might luck out sometimes and have some enterprising employee who is interested, but don't count on it.

Edit to add: on the other hand, I just ran across this option in my profile preferences: "Get notified when your answer is marked as helpful, solves a question, or is recommended by Apple." That sort of implies, at least, that somebody from Apple is paying attention. One can hope.

Andora29 (a.k.a. The rubber ducky? 😀):

I guess my frustration is the use of the NH voice recognition on my iPhone. In a previous life, I relied on the Dragon naturally speaking software and continually upgraded Over my 10 years of usage. It got better and better and the recognition became so much better. This software, Mrs. a lot and as you can see from the errors, mistakes words that I enunciate very very clearly. I’m used to it. By the way the NH above was the word in eight and it still won’t except it. It will not understand except and except on a routine basis. I’m sure you can decipher the difference is yourself. In short, the voice recognition falls short of my expectations and each new iOS upgrade does not improve it.

I wish I could turn off the duplication feature that seems to activate When I end a sentence with a period, the period does not show up so I repeat it and of course the entire paragraph is repeated. Sometimes I’m not looking while I’m dictating and the editing becomes a real chore. In short, I think the voice recognition is very useful but there may be some issue with noise cancellation that makes it Less than perfect. Any kind of pause seems to turn it off very quickly and then I get the double ladder issue as you see above in the it less than perfect statement. Oh well, one must adapt. I was hoping Apple would expedite that adaptation.

Just one voice more = Happens to me in several apps too, not only safari, voice over and keyboard pref didn't work. Checking turning off enhanced, but I actually need to work with it, because I am often off-line. Am on Mojave. I rely also a lot on dictating since long time (also old dragon user), need to use it in 2-3 languages due to physical obstacles and due to speed, and am impressed Apple has not corrected this not so old (some years) but quite persistent flaw. :(
