Unable to verify account name or password

i recently changed email provider and apple mail is unable to verify account name or password.


I have tried deleting and recreating account and restarting computer


email user and password work fine on provider "webmail", just not in Apple mail app.


Any ideas how to fix?

iMac 27", macOS 10.12

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. Please post back on whether or not this worked. Also try the Safe Mode. Please post back on whether or not this worked.

Safe Mode - About


If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown. If the log won’t post, try posting it in Pastebin and provide a link in a reply        Pastebin

This has happened to me a number of times and happened to my wife, just yesterday. Here is what usually works for me:


Make sure that you have entered the right account name and password in the Mail account information. Then Quit Mail, wait a few seconds, and then reactivate Mail. When you click on get mail, it should now work, if your issue, whatever it is, is the same as mine.

If this email provider is not Apple and you want to add this email account to the Apple Mail app, then you will need to create an "app-specific" password to enter into the Mail app. For example, if you attempt to add a Gmail or Microsoft email account, you would need to generate this app-specific password from their respective sites.
