Cursor jumps around

Hi,

With MBPro TouchBar 15" bought in June 2018, I'm in the nightmare of the "cursor jump".

Apple changed top case (keyboard, trackpad, battery assembly) and motherboard.

No avail.

Exactly what is described here

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7816195?page=4

On second repair, machine was totally erased and system reinstalled by Apple repair center from scratch.

Only third party installed was Msoft Office 2016( which we use 3 machines all in all).

Cursor problem again.

Apple makes me now create partition with system without any third party. Will try but I'm sure

problem will still be there.

In images I'm adding (dating from 10 days ago), one can see clearly how text becomes jumbled, or even types in the page number box.

When problem is occurring in Finder, it makes cursor jumping from a file to another

Any idea ?

A swollen battery is known to cause erratic mouse/pointer behavior.

You do not say what exact Mac you bought in 2018???

See if you qualify here:

https://www.apple.com/support/13inch-macbookpro-battery-replacement/

If you see any sign of swollen battery —by all means, unplug it, and take it in for assessment.

In or out of warranty you can get a free over the counter 'Apple Service Diagnostics' test /assessment

Plus you will note in some of the threads I mention in previous post (threads from Apple Communities) that Apple changed 2 machines anew for 2 customers, and the problem was back.
P.S. Again, while typing these simple 4 lines, cursor jumped back from line 4 to line 3.

P.S. 2 : Sorry about not specifying model. I was used to former Apple Communities profile where we could mention exactly which machines we use.

The screen? That makes no sense to me.

You do not have to be a computer technician to solve the problem—return it to Apple, it is not performing as expected—Let them sort it out.

I would suspect it is a faulty CPU/trackpad and needs replacing.

I would not be satisfied receiving a machine that did not work as expected.

If you think it is a software problem then do your due diligence:

To trouble shoot further you can:

  Try a SafeBoot https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Takes noticeable longer to get to the login screen, does a 5-15 minute disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, including dynamic loader cache,  etc.

This test will tell you if third party interference; extensions etc are not loaded in safe boot mode.

Test issue in another user (or guest user) account  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204443

This will tell you if it a universal issue or isolated to your user/admin account.

Granted. Double whammy is always possible.

I finally tried this :

Deactivating "tap to click" seems to solve it for some users. I've tried it, and sometimes it solves the problem, sometimes not.

So contrary to what Bob the Fisherman says, I suspect a design problem and/or interface glitch with trackpad.

Having to deactivate a functional gesture is abnormal and a real pain for me because it's the single most used gesture in my daily usage. Allows for very fast operation.

OK, found more and more occurrences of this problem (and Bob the Fisherman always implying users are dumb enough to touch the trackpad inadvertently as sole cause…) :

Are you sure you are not touching the trackpad with your hands while typing?]

In my case, I already replied to this, which would imply about a 100 inadvertent contacts per day from thenar eminence with trackpad. Preposterous… I know where my hands are, generally, in my life…

This last user describing exactly my symptoms

* The first thing I noticed was menus popping, up webpages switching, along with the jumping or crazy cursor. It's taken me three weeks to figure out it's a misfiring cursor navigation keyboard shortcut. I suspect that it might be happening anywhere there are similar key-combination shortcuts. I hope this helps.

Many who suffer from a jumping cursor have learned that it is their improper typing technique that is causing the issue. I would believe this to be the cause rather than a systemic problem with the cursor. If it was a cursor issue then these communities would have lit up with the same issue. Pointing to one thread does not indicate a systemic problem.

Another possibility is a swelling battery which may cause random and unpredictable cursor movement.

Apparently, you reply without reading first post and secondary threads.

1 - MacBook is in like new condition, no battery swelling or anything. Smoke free extremely

clean environment.

2 - Topcase has been changed

3 - Motherboard has been changed

4 - There is never a single unwanted contact with trackpad.

5 - A (relatively) rare occurence doesn't mean it's non-existent

6 - On threads related to this problem, "Me too" customers are by the hundreds.

7 - When typing this reply, cursor jumped twice to another line in text… with my palm, hand, wrist or hair or shoes never being anywhere near to trackpad.

8 - That said, Apple engineers try very hard, and I'm usually very happy with Apple Care. Still, they don't solve it.

9 - On 2 of these threads, Apple went as far as change the MBPro, with clients reproducing the problem in front of Genius employees. Do you think they would do this if this was just : "you don't know how to type" ? Please…

Jun 3, 2019 8:01 AM in response to quantxxx

We spent dozen of hours documenting this since 8 weeks, sending logs to Apple Care engineers through Capture Data, sending video screen capture when it happens.

My hands never have unwanted contact with trackpad, I'm not wearing 18-th century shirts

and dozens of bracelets.

This is not the problem. I'm aware enough of what I do when working to see, know, feel what my hands are doing.

Problem occurs even when not typing : cursor moves to another place on screen per se.

I've inserted in my first post a documented link to another thread. Suggest that all of these people

are dumb enough to type touching the trackpad with their palm each time unbeknownst is a bit of stretch,

don't you think so ?

I'm using MacBooks with trackpad since 2003, and TouchBar since June 2018. I know what I'm doing or not.

I know the rule about 3 servicing. I've had an iMac and a Macbook replaced thanks to that in past years.

Problem is I cannot send it on my own and have Apple change what ? The screen ?

Plus you will note in some of the threads I mention in previous post (threads from Apple Communities) that Apple changed 2 machines anew for 2 customers, and the problem was back.

Jun 3, 2019 9:22 AM in response to leroydouglas

That's what I meant : screen makes no sense.

All top case (with trackpad, battery and keyboard) plus motherboard, which contains the trackpad controller have been changed already.

It's been serviced twice and I've been with Apple Care Level 2 by email and phone for hours.

I'm negotiating now for a replacement of the machine.

It's a pity because beyond that, it's a remarkable MBook (especially the Touch Bar which is a true breakthrough in everyday use).

Is this a national sport of yours misrepresenting what people just wrote ? I wrote : it seems to sometimes solve it, sometimes not. Meaning it still happens, albeit less frequently. Several users on various threads here and elsewhere stated about tap/click problem.

When suddenly pointer is zipping in diagonal all the way from left bottom angle of the screen to Spotlight (always to Spotlight), and opens the last item in Spotlight (right upper corner), albeit my hand is barely moving, just typing a single digit, it's obviously because I inadvertently touched the trackpad with my left ear.

On my trackpad, I've done my homework and measured what movement would be required to "inadvertently", as you wrote, move cursor by touching trackpad without being aware of it and have it crossing all the screen in diagonal as it did : 11 cm. If I'm really touching trackpad on such a distance, 11 cm, without knowing it, I think I will call my neurologist to take care of my brain.

So your suggestion is a brilliant one.

I've done screen capture videos of what I've just described and sent it to Apple.👻
