Security Update 2019-003 10.13.6 failing at shutdown

If you have an older Mac, you are stuck on macOS 10.13.6. A number of people have had problems installing Security Update 2019-003 10.13.6, where on shutdown the Mac hangs at a black screen with just the cursor visible, requiring a hard reset that doesn't complete the installation. Rinse and repeat, but no success

Quick solution to enable successful shutdown, but does not install Update:

Delete the files that trigger the patch installation on shutdown

Solution to clear and reset a whole load of "stuff", and get the update installed:

The above works for update 2019-003 as well.

And your story?

iMac 27", macOS 10.13

Now this is a great example of what these forums are all about. I just found this post from a search and this solved my problem. I had "installed" this update about 3 times already on my 2010 iMac 27" and it would still keep showing up as an available update in Software Update.

After going through this checklist (oops, I forgot the step 5. Reboot in the middle) my system now shows the update as having been installed. Hopefully, it will stick this time. Thanks for the very helpful post. I wish I could award your post a "Problem Solved" gold star.

I don't see anything in particular, except maybe Time Machine?

EtreCheck is a simple little app to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac.

Pastebin is a good place to paste the whole report...

Workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck, blue arrow.

Strangely on my 21" 2010 iMac, this update installed just fine, as well as past updates. But, it seems that the 27" 2010 iMac, which basically has the same CPU/hard drive/RAM specs tends to require special efforts to get some of the Security Updates to completely install. Not sure what the issue is, but one time a representative from Apple asked me to send them a log from my computer to study the issue in more detail.

Chose this step and it worked fine. Mac Pro late 2013 model.

The update 003 stalled again and again before at 38 min. And had to turn back to the old 002.

But... today took Google search again, (there can only be one winner!) found these instructions.

Did the steps via the Terminal app, via copy paste, to get it securely run and done.

Via restarts the installation progressed perfectly.

Hope it will help many this way.

I have the same mid-2010 27" iMac and all security updates installed without a hitch which leads me to believe the issue must be software.

Launch Activity Monitor and see if there are any active applications besides Activity Monitor (items with icons next to the name), select them, and click Quit Process. If an app won't quit by clicking Quit, click Force Quit. Then try shutting down again.

Thanks for your quick reply. Top!

Actually it shuts down completely, but restarts as if a restart command was given.

Used the shut down button... of course :-)

It happened yesterday... after installing 2019-003... and again today...

Just did a Alt Command PR 3 times... before my coffee break

Nope... refuses to reset SMC!

3x PRAM didn't do the trick... repeated... nope...

Shuts down... secs... restarts... like my Dachshund while the ball peeps...

Will do some reboting later... check the safe mode shut downs

Have to get my deadlines... I'll keep posting until solved...

For now... many thanks!

I found in the library/preferences this file:

com.apple.PowerManagement.63E1949B-163F-5B43-A844-3A356713611B.plist

In system library as in user library

But not in the file "SystemConfiguration"

as hhttps://www.dssw.co.uk/reference/pmset.html

states...

Files

All changes made through pmset are saved in a persistent preferences file (per-system, not per-user) at /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist

Scheduled power on/off events are stored separately in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist

Both not there...

My brain needs rest now. Late hours in the Netherlands.

Appreciate your involvement. Next steps I can probably make on comming thursday

Thanks!

In 10.13.6 I find...

/Library/Preferences/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Containers/com.apple.lateragent/Data/Library/Preferences/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist

/Applications/TechTool Pro 11.app/Contents/Resources/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
