what You are suggesting is very Apple way of saying. I’m sure everyone has done this. As my previous messages, I have done a lot of experiment with my phone and following up by the adviser, still, the result is nul.. if you could provide some more test or experiment for me to test my phone. I would be happy to hear it. But I’m pretty sure what you are suggesting would be sth I had done in the past...
OK, here's a very simple test. Restore your phone to factory settings and do not restore a backup. Do not add any features, do not log in to your Apple ID or iCloud, and don't create any email accounts. The check your battery performance. If the problem is still present your phone has a hardware problem. Here are the instructions for restoring to factory settings-->Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support
I recently upgraded my iPhone 7 plus to 12.3.1 and the battery started to drain very quickly as mentioned in this thread. I called Apple Support and they are not aware of this issue. If you have a couple of minutes, I recommend calling them to let them know so that they can escalate the issue. The only solution they could offer was to try factory reseting the phone.
Yes, very much so. And obviously the extraordinary heat as a result.
Wondering if an app is not compatible with 12.3.1 and attempting to connect to (?data source on internet) and failing over an over. The only time I've ever noticed batt drain/heat like this is constant network activity for hours, especially when having difficulty connecting.

Is there anyone from Apple who is even reading these?
No. This is a user-to-user forum. Apple's participation here is minimal. That's explained in the Terms of Use to which you agreed when you registered.
If you want help from Apple, you can use the Contact Support link at the top right of every page of these forums. Or, see this article:
1) Clearly you have not read it, otherwise you would know that common factor is that it happens after the OS update.
2) Apple is aware of it, had you read the threads you would know that many of us have gone down to Apple to bring up the issue. Their excuse is always to change the battery or get a new phone.
3) If you had read the thread as you claim then you would be aware that I have changed my battery before as it was starting to fritz. After the battery change the phone was working fine - until the OS update, when suddenly, as if by magic, the battery drains at an unprecedented rate, it drops from 90% to less than 10% and then suddenly shuts down and refuses to turn back on as if the battery was flat. When I plug in the lightning cable the phone turns back on showing at least 15% and within about 15 minutes it charges back to 70%.
So unless Apple has miraculously and secretly enabled my lightning cable to supercharge my phone I am hard pressed to agree that it's the battery.
4) You say that we fail to consider a third party app, I would say that you assume that it is a third party app. Not everyone updates the apps immediately after the OS change, there are those who do and those who don't. Yet the problem still occurs. if you want to claim its the app, then either the older version is faulty (then regardless of whether we use the latest OS or the previous, the problem would occur), or the newer version is faulty (and would not explain why those of us who are using a version of an app that's not updated are facing the same problem). Either way the common factor here is the OS.
5) There have also been others here who have also said that they reset their phones to factory mode after - ergo, there are no 3rd party apps which can be blamed yet the battery drain still occurs.
The Iphone 6 that I still have? The one which I changed the battery? I tried factory resetting it and loaded only Whatsapp and it still happens. Amazingly my older iOS devices? The ones which are no longer supported by Apple (meaning no more updated OSes), their battery life is still doing fine. No sudden battery drain and shut down.
The common factor amongst the complaints have been that the severe and sudden battery drain occurs after the OS update. It is as if the OS has been designed to figure out how old the phone is and to cause problems so as to encourage us to buy a newer model of phone, something I wouldn't mind if not for the cost.
After I turned off installing apps (removes the App Store app) mine seems to work fine. I just leave it off and will turn it back on to update as needed.

How can user to user community help in such cases anyways?
Problem initiated by Apple, Problem can only be solved by Apple
That's why I suggested talking to Apple directly.
If it’s 6 weeks old, then bring it back. I believe ur still under warranty, right?!
I gave up on Apple fixing the battery drain on my iPod touch 6th gen. I got an Iblaison battery case for 50 bucks. It fits like a glove and works great.
I checked my battery it said it was fine. I saw the charge plummet from 92% to 50%. I checked under Settings --> Battery and the percentage of battery used by applications was 0. So something is wrong with the latest update.
Yep. I usually don't notice my battery much because I use a charger all the time. (in the car, at work, at home, etc) My phone is used a lot so I instinctively put it on a charger. That being said, in two hours it went from 100% to 48%. Then I watched it drop each minute with no apps running. I rebooted the phone just to be sure, and it rebooted from 34% to 1% after the reboot. However, It worked fine. I checked emails and downloaded pix but the percentage said 1% the whole time.
My iPhone 7 has a battery drain since IOS 12.3.1
It happens just at night when all apps are closed and the iPhone is loaded by the power cable. In the morning the ‘activities’ show 100% during the complete night till I use my iPhone again in the morning. You do not find the extreem use by some app. It is IOS that is consuming. By the extreem and long activity at night, the iPhone is not loaded to 100%.
True that. And I've literally gone through tons of forums and discussions in last couple of weeks. Out here where I live (Sri Lanka) we don't have apple stores or genius bars at all, just authorized dealers. Took mine to the shop I purchased and they told it's most probably is an effect caused by the recent update so to wait till the next one comes and do it.
Yes, my iPhone 7 has had terrible battery life since I installed the 12.3.1update. Post update, my phone regularly goes from 100% charge to less than 20% in less than 6 hours with almost no usage. (battery health shows 89%)

iPhone 6, 1yr old battery (100% max capacity, supports peak performance), background app refresh off.
Battery drains from 100% to 65% within 2-3 hours without *any* activity.
Sometimes runs hot with activity (eg, checking voicemail), accelerates battery drain.
No such issues before 12.3.1
IOS 12.4 beta 5 has been released as well which means within upcoming week or two the official update will be out. Make sure to do it connected via iTunes and lets hope the issue will be hopefully fixed back to normal for all of us..
