Recent update to itunes broke

I have an older iMac (Early 2009) running El Capitan. A few days ago I updated iTunes and now iTunes, Messages and the AppStore do not work. I get an error about the init.itunes.apple.com not being valid. I went through all my certs and saw no blue dotted ones etc... tonight, I went to https://init.itunes.apple.com and looked at the certificate, and it is expired.

Any suggestions on how to correct this issue?

Hello C Wayne,

Thanks for that info and for choosing the Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, you are unable to use iTunes, Messages and App Store on your iMac, and you get an error message. To help with this, please follow the steps in this Apple resource and then contact Apple if you need any further assistance.

Try deleting the certificate to see if a new one will download.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. Please post back on whether or not this worked. Also try the Safe Mode. Please post back on whether or not this worked.
