At this time the Service Program is limited to 13".

https://support.apple.com/13-inch-macbook-pro-display-backlight-service

however if at any time it is expanded to include your 15", typically Apple will issue a refund for out of pocket expenses for parts & labor... Having a service ticket will be your receipt..."affected by this issue, and you paid to have your display repaired, you can contact Apple about a refund."

My Macbook Pro 15" 2016 has this issue. The authorized service centre in Malaysia is charging USD700 for the replacement. I hardly even use the screen if I have my monitor at work, but during the lockdown period (1.5 months long) I was using it as an actual laptop, and the backlight stopped working past a certain angle one day. I imagine it would have easily died on me a year ago or even sooner if I used the screen more. It's absolutely ridiculous that they're making us pay for their design error!

This is really the ********* Apple product I have owned. On this particular macbook I have had the Logic board replaced due to failure, and I realized my battery was bloated as well (keep an eye out for that!). My husband's 2018 Macbook Pro 15" also has a battery bloat issue, so now we're getting that fixed also. The service centre needs 2 weeks to work on each one. Thankfully, my 2012 Macbook Pro 15" is still going strong and I'm using it now while we are getting all the others sorted. If Apple is not going to take responsibility, it's definitely the last Macbook I'll be buying. I've already dumped the iPhone in favour of an Android phone and have no regrets.

I'm not able to post links here (got my post deleted twice) but there are class action lawsuits and complaint pages around that you can add your experience to.

when he/she tell you that they will not take your mac under warrantly, you have to tell them that you want to do a claim.

Or do it by phone. Call apple, explain your issue and that your are not agree and want to do a claim.

after, you have to write a letter explaining the topic and reason of why you think that it’s a DESIGN ISSUE with links to web pages talking about flexgate and pictures. And send it at the address given by phone or mail by apple.

Just chiming in here, to register another case of this annoying issue, which documents the seemingly ongoing decline of quality, in Apple products.

Got my 15" Mid 2017 model (bought in december 2017) back today, after PAYING to have my screen replaced. Sent it for repair as it was exhibiting the stagelight effect, as well as blueish blodges in different areas of the screen. Other than this, there was a rattling sound from within the computer. It has never been dropped and the stagelight issue just "magically" appeared recently, when I started the computer up. The discolouration has been building for about half a year or so, but wasn't really properly noticed until a few months ago.

I had several frustrating discussions with Apple's tech support, to get them to accept that this was a known issue, directly related to the issue on 13" Macbook Pros of the same era, which they are repairing under an extended warranty on the screen.

Unfortunately there was no interest in accepting that the issue was anything else than normal wear and since I use this computer every day for work, I was forced to pay for the repair myself.

I have to say that this was the last straw for me. I am not going to buy a high end computer from Apple again, as I can no longer be certain that they produce products, that reflect the pricepoint of the device, from a quality-perspective.

I've bought Mac computers since 2005 and have had very good experiences with their service, when I've had issues, but my experience with this model (Aside from this issue, I've had the keyboard replaced in connection with the known issue there) and the level of service they are providing now just doesn't leave me comfortable with investing in their high end products.

As it happens, I'm fortunate enough, to be in a situation now, where I don't need a high end portable device and it seems like Hackintoshing has become easier and more stable recently (Yes yes, the switch to ARM will probably mean losing the possibility to update to the latest OS'es in the future). So I'm going to sell this computer now, cut my losses and build a Hackintosh for pro media work. I'll get a entry level ARM-macbook, when they come out, for administrative work, seeing as I am not going to cross over from Mac to Windows.

Apple products have never been perfect, but the recent development for Apple in regards to quality and responsibility for that quality has been a sad development.

I have got the same flexgate issue since 2 days. My display is on when i start opening the laptop but it goes off after the lid is lifted to some angle. This is a 2016 macbook pro 15 inch laptop. I am from southern part of India where we don't have apple stores. Also as per other people discussing in this form, this seems to be a common issue. Can you please consider this as part of the replacement program. I find that it doesn't make sense that for 13 inch laptop with same issue Apple has considered this as free replacement. Logically it is applicable for 15 inch as well. Apple must understand that we invest lot of money to buy such a premium product. The primary reason in making such investment is on the trust and brand. Apple should serious reconsider its decision and add 15 inch laptop also for the free repair category. Can u also help me with details about how can i get it repaired in southern part of India.

I am from India and purchased the 15 inch late 2016 Macbook Pro. First my battery went dead and it runs only on power now. Couple of days back the screen too went blank during my use. I figured out that it is the flexgate issue. My keyboard also faces issues along with my left speaker but these aren't really big issues but still they are issues! Apple lost a customer in me. Buy their expensive products and because of their fault in designing pay hefty amount in the name of after service. DISAPPOOINTED.

My 15" Macbook pro purchased on December 2016 start having exact same flexgate issue. I just got off the phone with Apple support who refuses to acknowledge that flexgate problem with the 13" Macbook pros applies to the 15" as well. This is very disappointing.

I really hope Apple will do the right thing here and extend the repair program to the 15" as well. Otherwise I will go for Lenovos ... they cost $600-$1000 instead of $3500 and last at least 3-4 years like my unusable Macbook pro. :(

I had given the 15inch macbook pro as a gift to my friend who is working for a non-profit organisation it Ethiopia, when he told me of this problem I had him send it to me and then paid for repair. it was 1 yr 2 months old.

Point being I had not given him a computer that should work for 1yr or 6 months. I had given him a computer to help with his work, even though I was upset I had to pay for the repair I did so willingly because I am honouring MY COMMITMENT to the purpose of the gift in the first place.

What did the the people on this thread expect to get from Apple when they purchased this computer????

Apple gives:Your MacBook Pro comes with 90 days of complimentary technical support and a one‑year limited warranty.

The only good thing from Apple in 2018 was the stock at $50

It is just mind boggling that Apple has still not responded favorably to this problem. It is so clear that it is a design flaw and it is a real shame that Apple is not honoring their commitment of quality towards their customers.

After having flexgate on my 15 inch 5-6 months ago on my 3-year old MacBook Pro (which was in a great shape otherwise, and handled with great care all the time!), I ended up buying a new MacBook Air. I went again for an Apple because I did not have time to migrate to a different OS, but I chose the Air version that costed less and I already researched the different options in terms of non-mac laptops for my future purchase. Note that for my "flexgated" laptop, I refused to fix it and am keeping it on a desk attached to an external monitor (that I had to buy) waiting for a free fix from Apple.

I have eleven Apple devices in my home that I just counted (3 laptops, 3 iPads, 3 iPhones, 1 Apple Watch, 1 Apple TV) and I want to give Apple the benefit of the doubt by waiting a bit before jumping to any conclusions, but this has gone on for too long now... I still hope they will do the right thing, but time is running out!

My 15in Mid-2017 MacBook Pro contracted the same issue a few days ago. I just came from the Apple Store, and they quoted me a $700 repair that I refused. I have been so disappointed with this MacBook over the years; it's a purchase I regret. I asked for the trade-in value and was told that it is worth $280, which is beyond disrespectful for an issue that is not my fault. Mind you: the display works perfectly fine at the moment; there is just the shadowing at the bottom, which will eventually render this MacBook useless (Apple's error, as we all know). I paid over $2500 on this computer, and they will not receive another cent from me. I sincerely hope that they will add the 15in MacBook Pro to the replacement program because this is unacceptable. I have apple everything, but this puts a sour taste in my mouth and I’m not sure how much more I can take of this disrespect.
