SanDisk

How do I change my MacBook that only has App Store or App Store and approved developers in security settings to allow SanDisk to install it's USB stick drive formatting software? FFS Apple, it's SanDisk, why aren't they an approved developer?

It is up to SanDisk to become an approved developer and SanDisk has chosen not to do so.

There is no need to install the SandDisk software on your Mac. Just connect the drive to the computer and use Disk Utility to partition and format the drive for you. Relying on a third party app will just cause you problems later when an update breaks the app. If they app is supposed to provide some other usefulness, then post what it does here and users can guide you on better macOS ways to accomplish the same task.

If you really want to use the SanDisk software, then you need to give GateKeeper permission to run the app by either going into Security pane of System Preferences and clicking to allow the SanDisk software permission to run. Or you can Control click the app and select "Open" where you will be prompted for your password.

Use Disk Utility to erase the USB stick. You may need to click on the "View" drop down list just above the left pane in Disk Utility and select "Show all devices". The physical drives should now show up in the left pane.

If you bought one of the special USB sticks which requires software to use it, then AFAIK you can still authorize GateKeeper to run it. If not, then you need to contact SanDisk tech support for assistance or return the drive.

I agree that Apple does not give users a proper option to manage unidentified developers easily. I understand and approve the use of GateKeeper, but I also think I should be able to easily run untrusted apps. It is definitely getting harder to run some untrusted apps. I know how to research apps & developers and accept the risks involved. Not all developers want to have formal dealings with Apple and I cannot blame them. For the average user I think GateKeeper is a very good idea and should not be bypassed. Unfortunately Apple does not want me as a user.

Thanks, none of those worked. Used to be you could plug and play with SanDisk USB 2.0 sticks, and Apple still had the 3rd option in May of 2019 that you could select unapproved developers in your security settings. Now we are back to apple the draconian, charging us more for the platform than anyone else and treating us like children, reminiscent of when I worked in high-speed modem companies in the early 90s. Support call: caller- how do I get to 9600bps with my new modem? response: go into settings, RS232, change port speed to 9.6 or whatever the highest setting and hit save. All good. Caller: "I'm on an apple...". Me: oh, do call apple, and ask steve jobs to stop treating you like a freaking child and allow access to this! Until then, sorry, you have an expensive 2400 BAUD modem, not a 9600bps that you thought you bought. Seriously. I get that if I chose to buy, with 200 other people, some obscure single person developer, that it may not stay current with the OS. That's on me, kind of like the iPhone / iPad app store, where so many apps became obsolete. But seriously, SanDisk? Were they not giving enough in graft to the partner program?

So, kind people of the community who may share my disdain for the draconian attitude of apple, how do I now format a brand new ******* SANDISK USB 2.0 stick for apple? Their disk manager didn't do it, and I can't install the Cruzer software. Which could have happened in May of this year.

I've erased it, it still does not appear on my desk top. It is behaving entirely differently than any SanDisk USB stick I've plugged into any of my macs prior to two weeks ago.

Well?

Seriously, this is one of the many failings of apple. Just like MS, they become draconian in their handling of 'other' vendors and forever change the landscape. At least with MS I've always been able to get down to the assembly language of the BIOS, while Apple had this great Motorola architecture that would keep the users from screwing up their systems, oh, wait, never mind. Apple has intel inside now too....

I've had issues mounting external drives recently and have been forced to launch Disk Utility and manually mount/unlock the external drive.

Also, Macs can be very picky about the USB sticks even name brand ones.

Did you format the drive on the same Mac you are trying to mount the drive? I've had issues where a drive formatted on one Mac won't mount at all on another Mac. It seems to come down to some weird compatibility issue with some USB sticks and/or macOS formatting between different macOS versions.

I agree things no longer just work these days and it is getting more frustrating.
