Airpods Always Disconnecting on All Devices

I have my 1st gen airpods about more than 1 year ago and have been using it on my iPhone X, iPad Mini and HP laptop with no issues. Just recently, my airpods always disconnects to these devices after about 1 minutes listening to music. Reconnecting it, only the left unit is functioning and disconnects again after a minute. I have tried resettting it and it works properly for about a minute and the same issue occurs. Tried other suggestions like closing other bluetooth connections of other devices, disabling automatic ear detection, etc but I still encounter the same issue. Note that the batteries are more than 95% charged. The same issue happens to my iPhone X, iPad mini and HP Spectre laptop. Note that the airpod firmware is 6.7.8. Has anybody experiencing the same issue? It's frustrating as I cannot use my airpods. Any suggestions? How can I downgrade the firmware? Hoping for a solution to this. Thank you.

You cannot downgrade the firmware. But you can try resetting it to its factory settings by:

  1. Going into Bluetooth settings on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, and forget the device.
  2. Place both of your AirPods in its charging case and leave the case lid open.
  3. Press an hold the button(located at the back of the charging case) for at least 15 seconds. You’ll start seeing the LED indicator flash white.
  4. After 15 seconds, you’ll see the LED indicator flash Amber a couple of times.
  5. After that, you have reset your AirPods to factory settings and you may let go of the button.
  6. Try pairing your airpods to your phone and hopefully this fixes your issue!

If this does not fix the issue, try rebooting your devices and see if that helps. If not, I would take it to the Apple Store and get it checked out. Good luck!

Yes, I think this has something to do with the 6.7.8 firmware. That is why I asked if it can be downgraded to the old firmware. Hope Apple will release a new airpod firmware soon. I will try to go the the Apple service center this week to have this checked. I am not sure if these will be replaced as the units are more than a year.

I will also check if I can buy/replace the left unit but I'm not sure if the issue will not happen again. I am planning to purchase the 3rd gen airpods but I am having second thoughts because of this issue. We hope we can have solution very soon. Good luck to us.

My current Airpods first gen is on firmware 6.8.8. I've been having this issue since late last year.

I think that Apple is just shutting down the older 1st gen Airpods to push for sales on the 3rd gen.

My friend bought his 1st Gen ones late last year and they're working fine.

I don't want to go to the Apple Service Center as my previous experience was horrible.

Went there with my faulty iPhone, took it in, returned it to me and charged me $60 SGD for doing absolutely nothing to it.

Hi Guys,

I am facing the same issue since the firmware upgrade last year. Did all the tricks mentioned by apple. Battery full charged but still it’s disconnecting after 1 minute.

i think it’s Apple strategy of forcing us to buy new AirPods. Shame on apple. No solution since 4months. I have 7 apple products. Will boycott apple if they don’t give any solution and stop using this strategy.

I have been having this disconnecting issue as well. One they worked fine and all of a sudden they stopped working right, and it got a little worse after they became a year old. I don’t know if it is related to the firmware or when my firmware was updated. But this is crazy. I have the original Beats wireless headset and they still work no degradation about 7 years after purchase but a little over a year AirPods degrade instantly. Hmmm...... something is weird here.

I have the same problem on my airpods 1gen. After a bit, about 30sec/max 1 minute, disconnect 1 airpod and after a bit disconnect the other one. I checked in live when it work on bluetooth list devices on my phone and when it stopped to play it says "disconnected" so is a surely software problem. The same thing with 3 phones i tryed, pc and macbook. The same problem if i listen to music or if i'm in a call speaking. Isn't possible to load a different or older firmware with usb cable to pc/mac ?
