Can’t hear a phone call through headset

I frequently use a plug in headset with my iPhone XS to take phone calls. Yesterday this feature suddenly stopped working. I can hear myself texting, YouTube videos, and other apps through my headphones, and others can hear my talking, but I cannot hear them. I used another headset with the same results. Phone has been reset, it has the most recent update, volume has been checked and Bluetooth has been turned off. Is anyone else experiencing this issue or found a resolution?

I ran into the same issue on my iPhone 8. Wired headphones worked fine with music, podcasts, audible etc... but when I tried to use them for a call (receiving or making) no sound at all. At first I bought a new set of headphones and new 3.5mm adapter(listed on Amazon as Apple verified). Still wouldn’t work.

I called Apple support, went through all my settings and had no luck. In fact one of the support staff recommended I just go buy a pair of Apple brand headphones despite the fact I now have 2 working sets of headphones... super frustrating!!

I read through these replies and saw a suggestion of replacing the lightning/3.5mm adapter. Went to Best Buy and got and Apple adapter for $9.99 and my calls now work!

Hi. I have the same problem with an iPhone 8. I'm using wired headphones from SteelSeries. When I listen to Spotify or YouTube they work fine. However, in calls or WebEx (videoconferencing app), the audio comes from the phone. Any ideas? Is Apple doing this on purpose for people to use their accessories?

The "audio routing" setting has an option for Bluetooth but not for wired headphones.

I only use this phone for work. My personal phone is an Android Xiaomi phone that works fine with any headphones. I don't see the point of buying expensive Apple devices. It's such a ripoff!

Also, no one from Apple is replying to this email thread, which is not very professional either. If there is a known or intended issue, just acknowledge it so that people don't waste time investigating.

Same issue. Have tried wired and Bluetooth earbuds. The only ones that work for calls with out having the call come out of the phone speaker are the Apple earbuds and I hate them. They are hard plastic and hurt my ears. This is infuriating! Ready to chunk this pos phone. Annnnd all these posts with zero response from Apple. This is why I always bought galaxy.

Interesting key point I suppose I will make. My wireless Bluetooth (non-Apple) earbuds and every pair of wired apple and non-Apple earbuds worked great for music and calls with my iPhone 7 and my work phone Galaxy. But multiple pairs of wired and Bluetooth earbuds later, along with multiple lightening connection devices and NONE of them work with my iPhone 11 for calls. They work great with music then I get a call and it comes out of my phone, even with the earbuds connected.

I think you have something there awully, wrt the audio routing that is. That said, I’ve a non-Apple adapter and was on 13.6. and updated to 13.7 after seeing your post. For me neither versions routed the call to the headphones. By default it was set to automatic, switching it to Bluetooth made no difference. There is (as you point out) no wired headset option on either version of iOS...

I've heard from many people that Apple brand gizmos aren't the solution. I can't believe that there's any reason why if you can hear sound in earphones from the Music app, and you can record using the microphone in your earphones using the Voice Recorder app that you should not be able to hear or speak into a phone using the same earphones and adapter. It's clearly a software issue, not a hardware issue, and Apple just need to fix it.

This thread is getting long!

I have the same issue; iPhone Xr with latest iOS 14.4. When using 3.5mm headphones using a 3.5 to lightning connector adapter, I can hear music, YouTube and other audio just fine even when a call rings is plastic through the headphones just fine. When I answer or make a call, (what's app or regular call) the audio no longer goes through the headphone but only is audible if I put the phone to my ear or turn on speakerphone.
