Can’t hear a phone call through headset

I frequently use a plug in headset with my iPhone XS to take phone calls. Yesterday this feature suddenly stopped working. I can hear myself texting, YouTube videos, and other apps through my headphones, and others can hear my talking, but I cannot hear them. I used another headset with the same results. Phone has been reset, it has the most recent update, volume has been checked and Bluetooth has been turned off. Is anyone else experiencing this issue or found a resolution?

I ran into the same issue on my iPhone 8. Wired headphones worked fine with music, podcasts, audible etc... but when I tried to use them for a call (receiving or making) no sound at all. At first I bought a new set of headphones and new 3.5mm adapter(listed on Amazon as Apple verified). Still wouldn’t work.

I called Apple support, went through all my settings and had no luck. In fact one of the support staff recommended I just go buy a pair of Apple brand headphones despite the fact I now have 2 working sets of headphones... super frustrating!!

I read through these replies and saw a suggestion of replacing the lightning/3.5mm adapter. Went to Best Buy and got and Apple adapter for $9.99 and my calls now work!

The only experience similar to that in months, since originally resolving the issue, was during a recent call to my bank, their automated phone system came thru my Apple wired earbuds as expected but as soon as a real person picked up, their voice came straight from the phone itself, not thru the earbuds. All other calls have come thru the earbuds as expected.

I know I'd be totally frustrated if my issue had continued.

I haven't read the whole thread but just to clarify - I thought the genuine apple wired earbuds currently work as expected for this particular issue. i.e. it is only when an adaptor is used to other (non-apple) wired earbuds that the issue is present. Is that correct ? i.e. if I got hold of a pair of genuine wired earbuds (lightening) then I should be ok for voice calls..?

Just bought brand new iPhone SE 2020. While I have been a loyal Apple guy for years...I am ‘old-school as well! I like using my wired headset with microphone for calls. Imagine my surprise when I found all my various wired headsets were good for ‘listening’ to music, recordings, etc. on my SE 2020...but were useless when making or receiving calls. Hmmmm?

i find Apple earbuds uncomfortable..they hurt my ears and fall out...hence my various wired over-the-ear headsets with microphones.

I’ve read all (7) pages of this thread/subject and it seems I am by far not the only one with this issue.

i am a little confused why Apple, with so many customers voicing the same complaint, has not responded to the questions posed and the same issue being a reality for so many people.

is there a ‘fix’ for this chronic problem. Seems from reading that I am not alone...lots of folks prefer wired headsets for telephone calls.

can you help us please Apple?

Please for the deity of your choice, has anyone found a solution to this yet? One that actually works? It's SOOOO frustrating.

I've just bought a new SE 2020, and I almost didn't buy an Apply product at all because of the whole not having a standard universal headphone jack any more thing, but got an adaptor at the same time. That works for everything other than phone calls (although I'm sure it did work for phone calls once). This is so rubbish.

Sadly that has not fixed my problem, but it does make me think that my problem only started recently, and I *think* it was right after getting Siri to read some pages on Safari to me, so I will look around that area of my phone. Its a pain - may have cost me a job interview as I could not hear the interviewer on the initial phone interview.

And... just to make the thread even longer, I'm having the same issue.

I have an iPhone 8, software version now 14.4. I've been using the same earbuds for the past year with no problem, and that's 2 different sets - one with cord, one Bluetooth, different brands. They were working great just until a few days ago when suddenly I wasn't able to hear on a phone call, but the person CAN hear me. And I can listen to music on the phone with them.

Since it's with both corded and Bluetooth, clearly it's not an issue with the jack. And since it's suddenly happening to both sets of ear buds that I've used without a problem for a year, plus I'm able to hear music, I can't imagine the buds are the problem either. It's just phone calls.

????????????

Why? Everything worked before the update so they must have fixed it so only "Apple" head sets work. They should fix it. Too much trouble to download an older operating system so it works right again. Some people depend on head set use that work in noisy environments and and have to keep using their hands. Some replies below show they ran out and bought Androids.

Same thing 2 hours ago, Czech Republic, iPh8, 3.5mm dongle,

4hrs of continous listening to podcasts,

phone rings,

media stops,

I push the answer button on the cord of the Sony earbuds

playback continues

phone continues to ring in pocket.

W T F ?

Second thing, 4G signal falls to one bar(small town near border) = sound cuts = playback pauses, once a minute.

I put the 3G on, everything fine, like Android.

Third thing, initial earbuds sound is too loud (like 85% loud instantly), while with regular on-ear Marshall headphones work just fine, same cable, same person, same device, same everything.
