Why does selecting a specific song in one of my playlists turn shuffle off?

I'm listening to a playlist on shuffle - then I go to select a certain song inside that same playlist for whatever reason - shuffle then turns off. Why would that be an automatic function? If I have a playlist on shuffle it should stay on shuffle until I choose to turn shuffle off.

Instead of playing the specific song right-click and choose Play Next, then use the fast-forward button if you want to skip the remainder of the current track. This should insert your song into the existing shuffled order, otherwise iTunes assumes you want to play in sequence. Alternatively you can use the shuffle control to reset shuffle mode. See Play, repeat, and shuffle music - Apple Support for details.
