out of application memory

IMAC late 2015, OS Mojave 10.4.6, 8GB memory 646.73 GB available of 1TB , apps using 16.19 GB started running very slow no matter what I was doing and getting error "Your system has run out of application memory" However, I have 646.73 GB available of 1TB and applications are only using 16.19 GB of that memory.

If you Mac ran normally in the beginning you might have some 3rd party software installed that is contributing to the problem. Download and run Etrecheck. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Copy the report

and use the Add Text button to include the report in your reply. How to use the Add Text Feature When Posting Large Amounts of Text, i.e. an Etrecheck Report

Before running Etrecheck assign Full Disk Access to Etrecheck so that it can get additional information from the Console and log files for the report:

Then we can examine the report and see if we can determine what's causing the problem.

If you have a 27" iMac you can purchase additional RAM to easily handle the problem. Installing RAM takes less than 5 minutes and normally requires no tools. If you own a 21.5" iMac than RAM is not expandable and you have to learn how to manage what you have. Please begin using Activity Monitor to do so, AM is pre-installed on the computer and is located in Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor. You can learn how to use AM by clicking Activity Monitor to read System Memory and determine how much RAM is being used

You can add additional RAM, please look at https://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/imac-27-inch-5k-2019-memory/ to see how simple a process it is. Buy the RAM from macsales.com or Crucial.com and add 2 8GB DIMMS and you will then have 24 GB which should be more than enough. This is SO SIMPLE to do you will not believe it. 8GB is considered the bare minimum to run Mac OS so please just do it. If you cannot take the computer to any local Apple Authorized Service Provider and they can assist.
