Optimised battery charging - not working?
Hi I have a new iPhone 11, and I notice my iPhone over the last 2 nights goes to 100 percent in the middle of the night. So I presume it’s not work despite settings?

iPhone X and same here, does nothing, goes straight to 100% as if the feature doesn’t exist. I’d also like point out how utterly useless and pointless it is to just post saying people should check it’s switched on, seriously?

No, it’s just a lazy response, which tends to be the case, it’s like this every time someone has an issue, tech support goes “Can you do all these thing’s you’ve already tried that didn’t fix it again”.

The reason tech support does that is because people say, "I've done everything and it didn't work." But, when the tech support person says, "Did you do A?" The person says, "Well, no, not that but I did everything." "Did you do B?" "Well, not exactly....". I did tech support for years and very often, going through the carefully designed list picks this up even when people said the "did everything". And, having spent a lot of time on these forums, a question like, "Did you turn on the setting?" is neither stupid nor lazy. It's often the solution.
Apple just released a note with the solution to our issue !

If Optimized Battery Charging doesn't activate
Optimized charging is designed to engage only in locations where you spend the most time, such as your home and place of work. The feature doesn't engage when your usage habits are more variable, such as when you travel. Because of this, some location settings must be enabled for Optimized Battery Charging to activate. None of the location information used for this feature is sent to Apple.
Here are a list of settings that must be enabled:
hope that can helps
Same problem here. Optimised battery setting is on and I almost always charge the phone overnight. I don't get any notification on the lock screen (my son's iPhone SE does) and I can see how the charge goes to 100% at 2:00-3:00am and stays there until I disconnect the charging cable at 8:00am when I wake up.
Hey, mruprai.
I see that you're worried that Optimsed Battery Charging on your iPhone 11 isn't working as expected since it’s fully charged in the middle of the night, and I'm glad to help.
About Optimized Battery Charging on your iPhone -- Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health and make sure the feature is on. When Optimized Battery Charging is on, you should also see a notification on the lock screen when your iPhone will be fully charged.
Let me know how that goes, and take care!
Worked for me yesterday for the first time!! iPhone 11 here... I updated on Monday to iOS 13.2. That night it didn't work =(. However, today I checked the battery graph on settings for last night and it worked!
It stopped charging at 80% around 1am then at around 4am it started to charge again until 5am when it reached 100%. I always put it out of the charger at around 7:30am, so I think it still needs to improve its predictive algorithm, but al least it worked.
PD: it didn't show the alert when I put the phone on the charger, so I just realised that it worked by looking the graph below.
PD2: I have background activity active.
Optimized battery charging is still not working for me on an iPhone 8 Plus and iOS13.2. It goes right to 100%. I’ve never seen the notice on my lock screen.
I’ve already tried different scenarios, such as turning off my night schedule and try it with alarm only, I’ve tried to charge it from different levels of battery and I’ve tried to keep my schedule same for a week (only charging it from around 00:00 to 6:30 in the morning). Nothing helped. The same goes for my friend and his iPhone 8.
Would appreciate if Apple fixes this.
It’s from an older date, but this is what I see almost every morning since the function is on:
Unless you are up in the middle of the night watching it you won't know when it goes to 100%. If you charge overnight it should always be at 100% in the morning. Optimized charging just controls when it reaches 100%.
Same here. I have the pro max and I've charged it from 11pm to 7am every night since launch day. Per the battery chart it is charging straight to 100%. Last night I happened to wake up at 1am and it was at 100%. Perhaps it needs a certain number of days worth of activity before it kicks in? Otherwise it's definitely not working.
Same for me. XS Max doesn’t seem to optimise charging, but my work SE does. I wonder if it’s something that requires the battery to drop below a specific peak performance threshold before the device thinks it needs to start optimising??
Yeah maybe... weird that it worked once for you. My work SE has a battery health max capacity of 94%, my XS Max is at 96%. Or maybe there's a bug... or maybe my charging routing is so irregular that the phone doesn't know what to do. I do plug my phone into my car for car play, but when I plug in at night for the nightly charge it's usually below 50%.
I have the same issue with my Iphone XS Max which is about 6 months old with 100% battery health - I have to admit that up until IOS13, I didn't charge this device overnight as the battery usually lasted a couple of days, so quite often I would charge it only when it was nearly empty. However since installing IOS13, I have charged it through the night for the last 6 nights, but it is still going straight to 100%. I would think that after 6 nights it should have figured out that I'm leaving it on charge overnight by now.
I also have an older Iphons 6S which had a new battery about a year ago (current battery health 99%). This Iphone 6S is correctly using optimised battery charging as I can see on the battery graph that it goes up to 80%, then pauses for a few hours before charging to 100%.
If your battery health is dropping like a stone take the phone to a genius bar and get it replaced. Phones never had this feature before, and their batteries never dropped like a stone, so if yours is it is broken.
This feature is more gimmick than reality. A phone that is at full charge for an hour or two isn't going to hurt the battery life. Leaving it at full charge for days will decrease the overall battery life slightly, but probably not a noticeable amount. But normal use of an iPhone (or any device powered by a Lithium battery) will reduce the state of charge for most of the operating time of the phone.
I find it hard to believe that Apple would go to the trouble of adding this feature if it was just a gimmick.
There are plenty of studies saying that leaving batteries at >80% or <20% for long periods will reduce their life over time.
I used to keep my phone on charge all day when I was at my desk, and usually had to replace the battery after 12-18 months. Since I stopped doing this, my battery health seems to stay higher for longer.
